Southern Cross University’s Head-Start provides an opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students (HSC) to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of courses offered at Southern Cross University.
Free from university fees, the program offers you the chance to gain a taste of university life, stimulate your interest in academic pursuits and enhance your educational performance and long term aspirations.
The program has been designed for students who have the academic capability to succeed at university.
Applicants will be selected on merit, based on their academic performance, a personal statement and the recommendation of the Principal.
There are two courses available which are Communication in Organisations and Biology.
These are a Board Endorsed Course and therefore can contribute towards the units required for the HSC however; they will not contribute towards an ATAR.

TVET courses are mainly delivered as 2 units of study towards the HSC. Each course provides a vocational qualification ranging from a Statement of Attainment to Certificate III. To enrol in any externally delivered VET courses (e.g. TAFE) you MUST complete an Expression of Interest form when you attend the interview with your parents. There is no guarantee a course will run therefore students must have their six subjects still selected with OHS prior to applying for a TVET course.
Additional things to consider before applying;
travel
cost of travel
work placement requirements of the course
The application form must be returned to Kerstin Woodward by 31st of July 2020 to be considered for 2021 courses.
** Note: submitting an application form is no indication that the course will run next year.
When choosing your subjects in the EDVAL software, please ensure you have selected 6 school- based subjects and then select a TAFE course if there is one that you are interested in.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW. They allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school.
A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship combines paid work, training and school; and as well as an industry recognised national qualification you will also gain credit towards the HSC.
Some apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR.
Please contact Kerstin Woodward for any further information required.
This is a possible option for students who may not be able to select subjects of their choosing eg due to clashes or a subject not being offered at OHS. Distance Education could be a solution for motivated and driven students.
Pupils need to apply and be signed off by the Principal as a suitable candidate.
Be aware that DE can be a challenge to complete successfully even for the most motivated students.
Karolyn Carvalho needs to be contacted regarding DE applications.
Fees apply for each year of study.
Further information can be found on the NSW Dept of Education website.
