A message from the Principal Ms Petrocco,

Welcome to Week 4! Last night I had the privilege of attending the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival at the Joan Sutherland Centre. Twenty of our students performed as part of the PVPAF Combined Choir. Congratulations to our students!!! They did an outstanding job and sang their hearts out! Congratulations and a huge thank you to Miss Phillips and Miss Lennon for their work in preparing our children to perform.

Last week we celebrated Education Week to acknowledge the wonderful work of our inclusive public school system, our students, staff and school communities. Mrs Hall informs me that our Open Day was a huge success! Congratulations to Mrs Settree, the Education Week Committee and all of our hardworking teachers and staff for all their work in preparing for this week.

Thank you to our P&C for providing delicious treats to sell and raise funds on the day and to Ms Macey and her team of helpers at the Book Fair which was very successful, selling $9480 worth of books, activity packs and stationery. Our school will receive a percentage of the sales to spend on library resources. Thank you to those of you who were able to attend and brought along family and friends to support your children and the school. We appreciate your support.

Australian Primary Principal Association (APPA) 2023 National Conference

Last week I attended the Australian Primary Principal Association (APPA) National Conference held in Hobart Tasmania as part of the NSW Primary Principals' Association (NSWPPA) delegation. The theme of the conference was 'Refreshing Leadership and Inspiring Futures'. Principals from the public, catholic and independent sectors across Australia and New Zealand came together to learn and build networks. We watched fabulous student performances and learnt about current educational trends and issues. It was a fantastic professional learning experience which highlighted the importance of learning and working with my principal colleagues (see pictures below).

NSW Curriculum Reform

The NSW Education Standard Authority (NESA) is the statutory body responsible in NSW for providing the syllabuses taught in primary and secondary schools across all the education sectors. Regardless of which school a student attends, all teachers teach and students learn from the same syllabuses in the Key Learning Areas.

All NSW syllabuses will be revised and rewritten as part of the recommendations of the NSW Curriculum Reform by NESA. So far the new:

NESA has just released the new 'CHIPS' draft syllabuses for consultation. These syllabuses are:

Further information can be found on the NESA website.

School Photos

School photos will be held on Wednesday 6 September. Photo envelopes have been sent home with your children and should only be returned on the day photos are taken as they are given directly to the School Photographer. If you would like a sibling family photo, please collect the envelope from the office.

Last Friday we celebrated Schools Tree Day.

The SRC had a blast planting beautiful kangaroo paw shrubs that were donated by Penrith Toyota in the Butterfly Garden.

Kingswood Public School will be trialing Quiet Hour for the rest of this year. Quiet Hour will be daily from 10am to 11am and will start this week. In order for this trial to be successful and for us to see the positive impact it has in uninterrupted student learning time, we request that parents/carers do not call the office between these hours unless absolutely necessary. We thank you for your understanding.

Each week KPS students engage in our You Can Do It Wellbeing lessons. Here is what our students are learning about in weeks 3 and 4.

Library

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The student’s reading log must be entered online by the student, parent or caregiver. The student will need to enter the Premier’s Reading Challenge website and log on using their NSW Department of Education username and password. Students can enter their books as they read them. It will not be necessary to hand in a paper copy to Miss Macey.

If books are borrowed from our school library, you will find the PRC ID number written inside the front cover of the book. You will also find them under ‘Booklist’ on the PRC website. https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Students must complete their online Student Reading Record by Friday 18 August 2023 (next week).

Please contact Miss Macey if you need any assistance.

Book Club

Scholastic Book Club operates 8 times a year and offers a convenient way for you and your child to select and purchase worthwhile and appealing books, stationery and craft items. Brochure items have been expertly chosen to span a wide range of interests, age groups and reading levels. Our school library benefits from all purchases made through the Book Club. Book Clubs LOOP is the Scholastic Book Clubs Linked Online Ordering & Payment platform for parents. This system is now the preferred way to order and pay for your selected items.

Issue 5 closed last week for orders. These orders should arrive within 2 weeks and will be distributed to students. Unfortunately, late Book Club orders cannot be accepted for processing.

Scholastic Book Fair Report 2023

Thank you for your wonderful support for our school’s Book Fair. A total of $9480 was spent on books, activity packs and stationery. Commission from the Book Fair sales, will enable the school library to be stocked with many new resources.

A special thank you to Miss Phillips, Miss Alimpangog, Miss Cleaver, Mr Kovac, Miss Lutton, Brigitte our KPS Lollipop lady and the Salas, Baker, Dsouza, Wells, Rapley, McIntosh, Blundell, Alger, Malhi and Howard families for kindly purchasing and donating a total of 22 new books to our library. I’m sure all of these new books will prove to be very popular with our students.

I would particularly like to thank Mrs Edwards, Mrs Parkin, Miss Bransby and Miss Alimpangog for their valuable assistance during the day. Also, a very BIG thank you to Mrs Young who visited to assist on the day!

I would also like to congratulate and thank our Library Monitors who assisted throughout the day.

The Lucky Door prize winners were Manaia ES1B, Zephaniah S2C and Oliver S3C. Each student won books to the value of $20 which were kindly donated by Scholastic Book Fairs.

The Book Fair was once again a huge success. Thank you for your continued support of our school.
