PNPS Anzac Day Memorial Assembly
Anzac day is a special day.
It is a day we honour all Australians who have served our country in times of war and conflict, in particular the original Anzacs who landed on the shores of Gallipoli over 100 years ago on 25 April 1915. Since then, 25 April has been known as ‘Anzac Day’. As a nation we take time on this day to remember those who served, and honour the sacrifices they made in our country’s name.
On Tuesday 30th April, Panania North will come together as a school community to hold an Anzac Day Memorial assembly. Students may bring to school a bunch of flowers to be placed at the flagpole during the assembly in remembrance.
Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement for 2025
Opportunity classes are for primary school students who have high academic potential or who are intellectually gifted.
They provide an environment where students can learn and make friends with classmates of similar ability. This can benefit a student’s academic progress and also their wellbeing.
Opportunity classes are offered in Years 5 and 6, with parents/carers applying in Year 4.
Students who are successfully placed will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6. Opportunity classes are just one of the ways that we cater for our high potential and gifted students.
Testing and assessment
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered on the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Students who wish to be considered for placement are required to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday, 1 August 2024.
How to apply
Parents/carers must apply online between 4 April March up until 20 May 2024 at: https://shsoc.education.nsw.gov.au
News from the Trolls!
This term, the Trolls have been engaging in a diverse array of visual arts activities. We have been exploring various mediums including pastels, watercolours, pencils, and paints, and have experimented with a wide spectrum of colours to bring their artistic visions to life. Visual arts serve as a dynamic and interactive avenue for students to refine their fine motor skills while nurturing their natural creativity.
The Trolls take great pleasure in crafting their masterpieces and delight in the opportunity to showcase their creations throughout the classroom, creating a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere for all to enjoy.

News from the Centaurs
The Centaurs were exploring the attributes of 3D objects last week. They created a variety of 3D objects using match sticks and play dough to represent the faces, edges, vertices and apexs.
The Centaurs were also able to name and describe these objects using their attributes.
Awesome job Centaurs!

PNPS Sun Safety Policy
Please help us by ensuring your child brings their hat to school everyday!
RATIONALE
Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world.
Skin damage, including skin cancer, is the result of cumulative exposure to the sun. Much of the damage occurs during childhood and adolescence. Research suggests that severe sunburn is a contributor to skin cancer and other forms of skin damage such as wrinkles, sunspots, blemishes and premature aging. Most skin damage and skin cancer is therefore preventable.
Panania North Public School can help reduce the incidence of skin cancer and the number of related deaths by encouraging all members of the school community to take effective skin protection measures.
AIMS
The aims of the Sun Safety Policy at Panania North Public School are to promote among students, staff and parents:
Positive attitudes towards skin protection
Lifestyle practices which can reduce the incidence of skin cancer and the number of related deaths
Awareness of the need for environmental changes which will reduce the level of exposure to the sun
Personal responsibility for and decision-making about skin protection.
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES FOR SKIN PROTECTION
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all students attending Panania North Public School are protected throughout the year from the harmful effects of the sun. A particular emphasis on implementation will be placed in Terms 1 and 4. The following strategies will be implemented:
Students will wear hats whenever they are outside such as before school, during recess, lunch, sport, excursions and sports carnivals.
Students who do not have their hats with them will play in shady areas in the playground. A “No Hat- Play in the Shade” strategy will be implemented.
Students will be encouraged to apply a SPF 30+ sunscreen.
Outdoor activities will be held in areas of shade whenever possible.
Teachers will endeavour to schedule outdoor activities before 11am and after 2pm where possible.
Staff and parents will be encouraged to act as role models by practising skin safe behaviour but it must be remembered that this policy is designed specifically for student protection.
Incorporate information sessions and programs on skin cancer prevention in PD/H/PE lessons
Ensure Sun Safety when students participate in PSSA and other sport programs
Inform parents/carers of the Sun Safety Policy
EVALUATION
Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the Sun Safety Policy through:
General observation of skin protective behaviour of school community
Random surveys of hat use in playground
Evaluate classroom activities involving skin cancer prevention
Evaluate school resources
Review policy every three years.

PNPS Minecraft Education Club
The benefits of games like Minecraft are endless for our students and our Minecraft education Club aims to emphasise this! The resources available to students at PNPS allow them to access immersive and interactive learning through various mediums.
Minecraft instils many of our PNPS Bee learner qualities:
Students will be tasked with specific creative challenges that promote problem solving Piper and challenging Charlie.
Students will be asked to complete these challenges individually or in a small team, promoting collaborative Cassie.
Students will also need to adapt to these challenges to get the best result, promoting adaptable Ava.
Our first lesson already saw our students experience technical difficulties and internet issues. Students had to be patient with the issue, collaborative by helping each other fix the problem and, solve problems by finding a work around.
Overall, We think our students will benefit greatly from this new club while also having tonnes of fun!
Please find details on our club below.
PNPS Eco Warriors
Eco Warriors aims to educate students on how we can be more environmentally friendly and reduce our impact on the planet. Our team of green-fingered friends will be taking care of The Patch where we will grow fresh produce with the intent of making some delicious dishes with our harvest. We will be responsible for researching what to plant in each season, planting it and maintaining the area during the growth.
In addition to this, Eco Warriors will be learning about the impact of food waste on the environment and will be responsible for managing the school worm farms and compost bins. In the future, we hope for the Eco Warriors to initiate a return and earn system within the school to promote recycling. This club will be a mixture of educational lessons and hands-on experiences.
If making a difference sounds like something you would be interested in, then come along to the Firefoxes' classroom at recess every Tuesday.

At Flower Power, we believe that gardening has significant benefits for everyone, regardless of age. That’s why our FREE Kids’ Gardening Class program will be running these school holidays. These classes are designed to foster a love of gardening early in life, spark curiosity about the natural world, develop creative thinking and encourage kids to get off their devices and into the great outdoors.
During the classes, budding gardeners will enjoy a guided tour of our nursery where they’ll learn all about the good bugs and bad bugs that can be found around the garden, while also keeping an eye out for other friendly garden critters. They’ll then pot up their very own seedling to take home and care for. All materials are supplied, however all children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Dates and times
Our Kids’ Gardening Classes are completely free to all children and will start at 11am weekdays during the school holiday period: Monday 15 – Friday 19 and Monday 22 – Wednesday 24 and Friday 26 April 2024. Please note, no classes will be held on Anzac Day, Thursday 25 April 2024. Classes run for 30-60 minutes.
Locations
Kids’ Gardening Classes are held at all 10 Flower Power Garden Centres across Sydney. Click here to find your nearest location.
