Celebrating 

Muogamarra Field Studies Centre was the first Environmental Education Centre (EEC) in New South Wales. It was established on the basis of a partnership agreement between the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the NSW Department of Education (DoE). Allen Strom, an Advisor for Conservation in the Department of Education was instrumental in forging the partnership agreement on Aboriginal Lands. The School opened in 1971 and started operation in 1972 with Barbara Hamilton being appointed as the first Teacher-in-charge. It was a pilot school which gained great success with more EEC's opening throughout the state over the following years.

Historically, the purpose of the Centre was to immerse students in the Australian bush, so they had the opportunity to learn about the area’s natural and cultural heritage whilst engaging in curriculum. This is still a key mandate for the current EEC's. In 1984 due to the risk of fire at Muogamarra, the EEC relocated to

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and its name was changed to Kalkari Field Studies Centre. In 1987, the EEC moved to the NSW NPWS training facility at
Bobbin Head in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and became

Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre

where it remains today.
