Reasoning

What is it?

Students are reasoning mathematically when they explain their thinking, when they deduce and justify strategies used and conclusions reached, when they adapt the known to the unknown, when they transfer learning from one context to another, and when they compare and contrast related ideas and explain their choices.

Reasoning in math is the process of applying logical thinking to a situation to derive the correct problem solving strategy for a given question, and using this method to develop and describe a solution. Put more simply, mathematical reasoning is the bridge between fluency and problem solving.

At Mortlake we use visual representations and language to support students conceptual understanding and reasoning
