Mathematics Year 11 Courses for the Year 10 students of 2025
Recommendations concerning the Mathematics Courses in Year 11 and the level of study required.
Please note:
Course 1: Completes Core topics and minimal Pathways
Course 2: Completes Core topics and some Pathways
Course 3: Compeles Core topics and most Pathways
Mathematics Standard 2
Mathematics Standard 2 is designed for those students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Stage 5 but are not seeking the in-depth knowledge of higher mathematics that the study of calculus would provide. There are still challenging components in this course, so students will need to apply themselves diligently and build effective study habits to increase their chance of success.
The outcomes and content in the Stage 6 Mathematics Standard syllabus are written with the assumption that students studying this course will have engaged with all of the Core topics and with the following Pathway sub-strands – Financial mathematics, Linear relationships, Non-linear relationships, Right-angled triangles (Trigonometry), Single variable data analysis and Probability.
Only those students from Course 1 who have achieved a high level of understanding of these topics should attempt Mathematics Standard 2.
Mathematics Standard 1
Mathematics Standard 1 is a course that is offered in Year 12 if students want to improve their numeracy skills and confidence in making mathematics meaningful. Numeracy is more than just operating with numbers. It requires mathematical knowledge and understanding, mathematical problem-solving skills and literacy skills, as well as positive attitudes. This course branches off from Year 11 Standard and allows students to selectively study less topics compared to the Mathematics Standard 2 course.
Mathematics Advanced
The outcomes and content in the Mathematics Advanced Stage 6 syllabus are written with the assumption that students studying this course will have engaged with all Core topics and some Pathways topics from our updated syllabus and programs. These include the topics of Algebraic techniques, Surds and Indices, Equations, Linear Relationships, Trigonometry, Pythagoras’ Theorem and Single variable data analysis.
Students from Course 3 would have completed all the topics studied above.
Only those students from Course 2 who have achieved a high level of understanding of these topics should attempt Mathematics Advanced.
Mathematics Extension 1
The outcome and content in the Mathematics Extension Stage 6 syllabus are a written with the assumption that students studying this course will have engaged with all the Core topics and most Pathway topics from our updated syllabus and programs.
Students who are from Course 3 would have completed all the topics previously mentioned.
Students wishing to enrol in Mathematics Extension 1 will be required to work at a higher level and will have need to have demonstrated a high/outstanding level of understanding of the Course 3 work.
