Languages

The study of a language can be fulfilling in itself.  It encourages tolerance and cultural understanding.  The process of language learning develops skills in analytical thinking and self-expression. This promote confidence, broadens horizons and develops a greater understanding of how English is structured.

French – Why?

• It is seen very much as an international language for trade, travel and worldwide organisations e.g. United Nations.  French is one of the few languages spoken on every continent.

• Is a major language of the South Pacific

• There are many French companies now operating in Australia.

• Cordon Bleu cookery courses – all terminology in French

• French is one of the two main languages used for all Olympic Games

• Opens the door to travel and work in Europe

Japanese – Why?

• Many Japanese companies operating in Australia

• Large tourist and hospitality industries in Japan and Australia

• Interesting to learn all Japanese scripts, Hiragana, Kanji and Katakana

• Popular holiday destination for Australians

• Many opportunities for teaching English in Japan

• Opens the door to travel and work in Asia

• A very different approach both in language and culture therefore fascinating.

How?

• Various materials will be used, songs, games, YouTube, magazines, modern textbooks.

• Students will be encouraged to have penfriends through our relationship with Yamada Nishi High School in Osaka

• Possible excursions to restaurants, youth forums and appropriate foreign language films to develop cultural appreciation

• Possible participation in exchange programs to France and Japan at the end of Year 10.

• Use of Education Perfect for work at personal pace, and to memorise vocabulary

• Research of relevant cultural issues and the opportunity to develop ICT skills

With engagement, students can expect fluency in well-rehearsed topics. However, like learning an instrument, learning is gradual and dependent on effort and practise.
