The Numeracy CEC supports students to develop the core numeracy skills required to become active and successful participants in society. When students become functionally numerate, they are able to manage a situation or solve a problem in everyday contexts. This course offers students the opportunity to prepare for post-school options including employment or further training.
The Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses:
build upon students’ learning in the Mathematics K–10 Syllabus,
assume students have developed core numeracy skills; and
offer opportunities for students to think mathematically.
Numerical reasoning and mathematical thinking involves questioning, communicating, reasoning and reflecting and promotes students’ ability to generalise, challenge, find connections and think critically and creatively.
The Numeracy course is focused on building functional and practical skills including: ٚ
Budgeting ٚEarning and spending money ٚ
Using probability in everyday situations ٚ
Interpreting statistics in the media ٚ
Understanding plans and maps
The course can count towards the Higher School Certificate and appear on the student's Record of School Achievement (RoSA). Where students request a RoSA, the Numeracy course will be listed with their other Stage 6 courses.
The Numeracy course is a Content Endorsed Course (CEC) developed by NESA. These courses can be included in the achievement of the HSC but are not externally examined and do not contribute to the calculation of an ATAR. As a CEC, the Numeracy course offer schools the flexibility to determine the nature and emphasis of learning and assessment according to their local priorities.
As a CEC, there is no HSC examination for the Numeracy course. Assessment in this course is school-based. Teachers award a grade in Year 11 using the Common Grade Scale and an assessment grade in Year 12 using the Achievement Level Descriptions for reporting achievement.
