Who's reading what?
Ms McLoughlin is currently reading 'Secrets in the Fire', which is a 7-9 book on the PRC. A real-life story based on a young girl, Sofia, and her struggles for survival in war-torn Africa.
Fleeing from murderous bandits, searching for a new home - Sofia thought she and her family (her mother, older sister, and younger brother) had finally found solace in safe village by the river. That is, until she accidentally strayed from the path and found herself standing on a land-mine. In a blur of dirt and red, Sofia and her older sister, Maria, were rushed to hospital. Maria never recovered and Sofia found herself waking up in a hospital bed with no legs. A gripping and inspiring story. You'll have to read to find out what happens next!

One Boy's Amazing Story of Survival
"I was not aware that I was crying until I saw the tears hit my shoes. Even with all the lights at the airport, the night outside looked dark and the air seemed thick. I wiped my eyes and tried to figure out what I could do. I was alone in a foreign land at the age of nine, and I did not speak the language. I was, quite simply, terrified."

Try to imagine spending some time away from a screen. Instead, you find yourself opening your mind to a world of possibilities and imagination. You're loving the characters, then you're hating them! You turn the pages in an excited fury - what will happen next?
Will the hero survive? Will that jerk of a character get their comeuppance? Will you find yourself throwing the book down in frustration (metaphorically, please!) and starting a rant about the author's plot choices? Either way, you will experience an array of emotions on every page.
If you're not into reading a narrative, you can, instead, find yourself immersed in the incredible personal lives of individuals through autobiographies. Read about political figures, sporting legends, and inspirational stories of struggle and survival against all odds.
The Premier's Reading Challenge revolves around a list of acclaimed books and challenges students in Years 7 - 9 to read and explore at least 20 texts before the timer runs out. This is a challenge to complete if you're willing to expand your mind and learn a few things along the way. Your world will be broadened and, quite possibly, you might find your grades improving in school.
