Understanding the tasks
Rating the tasks
This lesson contains a few activities. Each activity will have one or more tasks. These tasks have been given a rating.
Some of the tasks in this lesson are must do. These are important to help you understand the introductory ideas or skills.
Have a go at the should do tasks and reach out to your friends or teacher if you need some advice. These will usually take a bit longer to complete than must do tasks.
Could do tasks will probably take you some extra time and might need you to get creative or problem solve. We strongly encourage you to try these.
Activity 1 - Numbers
Task 1
Read the double page spread (2 pages) of the picture book below and then use the Google Doc template to complete the See, think and wonder activity.
Click on the button to open a new tab and view the Google Doc.
Click on the Use Template button to create a copy for you to edit.
Task 2
Complete the interactive by dragging the tick symbol to numbers larger than 10 000 and the cross symbol to numbers smaller than 10 000.
When you think you have labelled all the numbers correctly, use the blue Submit button to check your answers.

Activity 2 - Place value
Task 1
Click on the image to open the Place Value activity on the Transum website, in a new tab.
Test your knowledge of place value for integers and decimals.

Task 2
Complete the interactive questions below without a calculator. A good understanding of place value will be required!
Task 3
Can you use one calculation to work out the answer to another, without a calculator?
Activity 3 - Scientific notation

Use the statements about scientific notation to complete the Frayer diagram Google Slides activity.

Task 3
Use your completed Frayer diagram and the Scientific notation page on the Maths is fun website to answer the following questions.
Task 4
Complete the embedded interactive, Power Match, to test your ability to find a given position on a logarithmic scale.
How close can you get to the target?
Click and drag the green dot to the correct point on the ruler to match the target number.
Use the New Target button to set a new target to locate.
Test yourself against 10 different target numbers.
Did you get more accurate as you made more attempts?

Handing in your work
Don't forget to hand in the work you completed today!
Your teacher will have told you to do one of the following:
Upload any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your Learning Management system (MS Teams, Google Classroom for example).
Email any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your teacher.
Make sure you keep any handwritten work you did in your exercise book or folder as your teacher may need to see these when you are back in class.
