Student Leadership Update

JPS kicked off the start of the school year with the first sporting event of the year, the Swimming Carnival! The Year 6 leaders held our first school fundraiser where they sold zooper doopers. In about 20 minutes we were completely sold out. We ended up raising about $190 to go towards the Year 6 formal.

Our second fundraiser was also selling zooper doopers. This time we had more of them since last time they all sold out within 20 minutes. This time the fundraiser took place at the JPS 2023 Cross Country Carnival. To our surprise everything was sold out in just 20 minutes again! Although this time we made about $220! This year's Year 6 graduation dinner is going to be great!

Our last fundraiser for this term was a school mufti day. Students donated either a gold coin or a chocolate egg in return for being allowed to wear mufti. Everyone looked great and we made enough money for the P&C to make 25 Easter baskets for the Easter raffle.

Supporting Your Child's Learning

Parents and carers are a child’s first educator. As a parent or carer, your engagement is critical to your child’s learning journey and education outcomes. Recognising the importance of teachers and parents working together to best support your children's education, this new regular section of the newsletter will communicate helpful tips from our Curriculum Team on how you can support your child's learning at home.

A Message from our Principal

Welcome to 2023's 2nd edition of the Jindabyne Public School Newsletter. We hope that you enjoy having access to our student work samples, insights into each stage via the stage updates and information on the curricular and extra-curricular activities that make up our school days. Looking back on Term 1, it is clear that there is no such thing as a quiet term anymore.

A quick glance over the past 11 weeks shows that our students have been involved in so many events. In sport we have had students involved in representative swimming (at school, district and regional level), cross country (school and district), the netball and rugby league/touch gala days, and MTB Interschools. We've also sent our student leaders to the GRIP Leadership conference, hosted our ANZAC Ceremony, had a Teddy Bears' Picnic with Kindergarten and explored Canberra with Year 5. In between all of this we have, of course, also found time for our usual high-quality teaching and learning. Year 3 and Year 5 even had time to sit their NAPLAN assessments! I'd like to think that Term 2 will be a little quieter, but I doubt it!

I will be on long service leave for the first four weeks of Term 2. During my absence Mrs Liz Dwyer will be relieving as Principal and I know she will enjoy the experience just as much as I do.

JPS Community Members Feature

Get to know our school community better! Featuring interviews with new people each issue, here is just some of the amazing people that make our school a special place:

Staff Member:  Georgia Hasler

Current position: I am currently working as an SLSO (Student Learning Support Officer) in Kindergarten.

What did you do before working at JCS? During my senior years at school I studied and obtained my Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care. This allowed me to work as an Early Childhood Educator straight out of school up at Bent Street for many years. Most recently, however, I was out at NSTC, coordinating the Trampolining and Airbag facilities.

Describe your role: Supporting both students and teachers in the classroom.

Favourite thing about your job: Being able to make a difference in a child’s day/learning and help their start to school be that of a positive one.

Favourite thing to do outside of JCS: Outside of work I enjoy all things Jindy has on offer; snowboarding, mountain biking, wakeboarding, and camping trips in the summer.

Describe yourself in one word: One was tricky so I’ve gone with two: Energetic and Caring.

Student:  Archie Tripet

Class: Kindergarten (KM)

Favourite thing to do at school: My favourite thing to do at school is drawing and playing with the foam blocks.

How do you show our school values (respect, responsibility or personal best)?  I always try to listen to my teachers and use a kind voice when I talk to my friends.

Favourite thing to do outside of JCS: At home I like to play with my toys and play with my brother's Lego.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Happy

Parent/Carer:  Jessie Cullen

Connection to JCS/Jindabyne: My daughter had been attending school at JCS for just over 2 years, but I have resided in Jindabyne and surrounding regions full time around 12 years. Starting like most people in the town as lift operator in 2006, I quickly realised Jindabyne was the place for me after back to back winters for a few years. Over that time it has been amazing watching such a seasonal town blossom into an all year round tourist destination.

Contribution to school community: I like to give my time when I can, helping at carnivals and recently being a parent helper in my daughters classroom. This has lead to me being employed as a casual SLSO so I can work when the school needs me and assist the great teachers we have at our school.

Outside of JCS: I love sport and being outside. We recently moved onto a farm so learning to live a little more remote and amongst cattle has been a learning curve to say the least. There is always something to do or learn. I've recently started a new career in bookkeeping where I will be going back to school to build on my skills and gain a higher qualification.

Describe yourself in one word: Resilient

Anything you would like to add: I have loved being a part of the Jindabyne community and watching my daughter grow up in this beautiful region. Having JCS to start off my daughters schooling life has been great and has built strong foundations for her to become an amazing person (not that she isn't already 😉).
