Jasper Road Public School

Term 4 Week 4 Newsletter

8 November 2024

Principal's Address

It has been a busy fortnight at Jasper Road with Year 6 holding their Market Day, Year 2 attending a Korean Language Excursion, the whole school dancing the night away at the P&C Disco and our Band students being entertained and learning from the NSW Police Band.

A gallery of photos from these events will be added to the school website in the coming days.

PLANNING FOR 2025

The school and executive have commenced planning for 2025. To assist with planning, if you are leaving our school at the end of the year, could you please contact the office. As sad as we will be to see you leave our school, knowing this information will assist with class formation.

BAND COME AND TRY

The Jasper Road Band is a highly valued program with over 150 students involved yearly. During Term 4 each year, students currently in Years 2-5 are afforded the opportunity to enrol for the following year.

Every year the school holds a ‘Come and Try’ Band Night for interested students and families. On this night, we aim to provide as much information to parents as possible, whilst including an introduction to each instrument and a chance for students to try them out. All students wishing you join for 2024 are encouraged to attend.

AGMS’s

We would like to inform the community of two upcoming Annual General Meetings.

The Parents and Citizens AGM will be held on Monday 11 November from 7pm in the staffroom. All parents and community members are invited to attend to discuss 2025 planning and activities.

The School Band Committee AGM will be held on Monday 25 November from 7:15pm. All parents of band students including incoming students are invited to attend.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

Our 2025 Kindergarten Orientation program commenced this week with a parent information session. The purpose of the orientation program is to welcome new and existing families while transitioning our new students to ‘big school’. The program will continue over the next three weeks with on-site visits for students and further parent sessions. All correspondence has been sent out to families who have enrolled a child for Kindergarten next year. If you have a child commencing Kindergarten at our school next year, I encourage you to complete the enrolment process as soon as possible to ensure they don’t miss out.

SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL & OPPORTUNITY CLASSES

Applications for selective high school and opportunity class entry in 2026 will be open from 7 November 2024 to 21 February 2025. There will be no late applications due to the longer application period, and the application closing date being closer to the test dates and logistical constraints around organising test centres and devices.

Parents and carers must apply online using the Selective high school and opportunity class placement application website.

This change to the application period means that parents and carers will now need to apply for opportunity class placement when their child is in Year 3 (or by the end of Week 4, Term 1 when their child is in Year 4). This change applies to students currently in Year 3

For selective high school placement, parents and carers will continue to apply when their child is in Year 5 and can now apply when their child is in year 6 until the end of Week 4, Term 1.

From 2025, the placement tests for selective high schools and opportunity classes will move from single version paper-based tests to computer-based tests.

Detailed instructions on how to apply are available at:

THRIVE

During term 3 students in Stage 3 self-nominated to participate in an extension program in an area of their choice. We had over 30 applications and 14 were chosen to participate in this weekly program over term 3 and work with Mrs O’Donoghue. Many students also committed hours after school in the holidays.

Last week at the 3-6 Assembly we had the privilege of watching seven students present their THRIVE Projects. We had presentations on a 3D airport, the workings and model of a combustion engine, waste management, a self-written and performed song, a portrait, a fashion portfolio and a website design on Animals of the World.

Congratulations to Ryan, Saadi, Arzoo, Ayesha, Kingsley, Grace and Natasha.

Looking forward to the next presentations in week 5.

Attendance

Congratulations to the 723 students who met or exceeded the school attendance target this week! For all of term 4 we have had 653 students, which is wonderful. There is still a lot of learning to occur over the next 6 weeks along with many exciting class, stage and whole school events. Hoping that we can all maintain excellent attendance.

Kinder 2025

On Thursday 7 November we met many of our 2025 Kindergarten parents at our Kinder Orientation Night. Next Wednesday 13 November we have our first session for students along with an information session for parents in the hall. Our 2024 Kindergarten teachers are eager to meet our new students. It would be great to see everyone before 9:30 so we can start our sessions promptly.

Kindergarten Enrolment

Kindergarten enrolments for 2025 are now open! If you have a child or know of anyone living in the JRPS catchment area whose child turns 5 by July 31, 2025, please enrol sooner rather than later so that you receive all correspondence. Use the following link to access the enrolment tab on our website for more information.

School Stages

From the Office

Each fortnight we will send you instructions or a link to a "How to" guide from School Bytes. This fortnight is all about how to sync the school calendar to your phone.

Lost Property

There is an overwhelming amount of lost property in the school. These items include jumpers, hats, lunch boxes, plastic containers and water bottles. We ask all parents and carers to ensure that all items are labelled with your child’s name. Also, please encourage your child to search for their lost items in the lost property bin outside, near the sick bay entrance.

Arbor News

National Recycling Week Toy Swap

In Week 6, Arbors will be hosting a Jasper Road Toy Swap event to celebrate National Recycling Week. This day will give students a chance to bring in an old toy that they have finished playing with and swap it with another participating student. Students are encouraged to bring a toy that is still in reasonable condition but is not extremely valuable. Students must make sure they have checked with their parents to ensure that they have permission to swap the toy, as exchanges made on the day will be final.

When?

Yrs 3-6 - Wednesday 20 Nov (Week 6), first half of lunch

K - Yr 2 - Thursday 21 Nov (Week 6), first half of lunch

How will it work?

Students who wish to participate need to bring an old toy on their allocated day, Wednesday or Thursday in Week 6. Once everyone is present, students will be encouraged to walk around the top quad to show their toy to other students and arrange a mutually agreeable swap.

Why are we doing this?

So often in Australia we throw things away that are still good enough to be used in other ways! By swapping a toy and getting one that is "new-to-you" you might be saving a toy from landfill, reducing waste and having fun at the same time.

Canteen

Canteen Payments

May we ask if you are paying cash for your child's order or sending spending money, where possible please send coins or smaller value notes. We have limited change available and struggle to change large notes of a morning.

FlexiSchools is a cashless option where canteen orders can be placed each day or even days/weeks in advance. This removes the worry of lost change or forgetting to hand in the order. Ordering can be done for any item on our menu including ice blocks.

If you have placed a recess order, please let your child/ren know to join the "Express Line" at the canteen to collect the order.

Lunch orders are delivered to the classroom, however, if you have ordered any of the following items, please ask your
child/ren to collect them from the "Express Line" at the canteen:

Changes or Enquiries for Canteen Orders

Should you need to change or cancel your child's canteen order, we kindly request that instead of contacting the canteen or school directly, please reach out to our Healthy Canteens Office, where multiple staff members are available to assist you promptly. Contacting the school or canteen can disrupt lunch preparation and experience delays in communication.

Contact Details:

SMS Service: You may also use our SMS service to cancel an order. Simply text us with the following details:

We will process the cancellation and send you a confirmation SMS.

Important Note: We regret we are unable to hold orders. Instead, cancelled orders will result in funds returning to your FlexiSchools account. This policy ensures clarity, especially in cases of delayed student returns or changes in onsite staff.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. By following these guidelines, we aim to enhance efficiency and minimise disruptions for all involved parties. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
