To learn more about sampling techniques in an intertidal wetland.
How do we measure crab populations in an area?
During your fieldwork, crab populations will be estimated using sampling techniques. These make an estimate, which is roughly accurate of the population.
Abundance refers to the number of individuals in the area. A 1 metre x 1 metre quadrant will be used to measure abundance of crab holes, the assumption being that crab holes = number of crabs. Click here to read the paper that references this.
In this video, learn how to use quadrats and transects to determine the abdance and distribution of a species in an ecosystem. These are techniques that will be used on the day of the excursion.
