Fieldwork Report 

Task:

Using your research conducted before and after the excursion, the data and observations collected on the fieldwork day, and your subsequent analysis, write a comprehensive fieldwork report. The report should address the inquiry question: Do the subtropical rainforests of the Illawarra-Shoalhaven have ecosystem integrity?

Key concepts:

Ecosystem integrity is often defined as the ability of an ecosystem to support and maintain ecological processes, structures, species diversity, and resilience over time, ensuring that it can withstand environmental stressors and disturbances. It involves:

• Biodiversity: A high level of species diversity is crucial for ecosystem stability.

• Functional Processes: The maintenance of natural cycles (e.g., water and nutrient cycling).

• Resilience: The ability to recover from disturbances like fires, floods, or human impact.

• Self-Sustainability: Ecosystem integrity implies minimal human intervention for the system to sustain itself over time
  
  

Instructions:

1. Introduction:

• Briefly describe the subtropical rainforests of the Illawarra-Shoalhaven, including their significance and unique features.

• State the inquiry question and the purpose of the report.

2. Research and Data Collection:

• Summarise the key research findings you gathered before the excursion. This includes information on the ecosystem's historical and current conditions.

• Describe the observations and data collected during the fieldwork day, including specific details about the activities investigating the characteristics, resilience, impact of human-induced modifications.  

3. Analysis:

• Assess the ecosystem's vulnerability and resilience in the context of human-induced modifications. Consider factors such as:

  1. 1. • The decimation of Red Cedar (Toona ciliata).

        • Land clearing for dairy farming and mining

        • Weed invasion and feral animal impacts.

        • Habitat fragmentation urban development/human activities 

        • The influence of climate change, particularly increasing temperatures, given the ecosystem's position at its southernmost range.

• Include maps, visual representations, etc., and charts from the data collected during your fieldwork day to visually represent your assessment.
  
  

4. Ecosystem Integrity:

• Evaluate the overall integrity of the subtropical rainforests based on your analysis. Discuss how the identified factors impact the ecosystem's health and functionality.

5. Management Strategies:

• Discuss the management strategies in place for the subtropical rainforests in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven. This can include the following areas: 

  1. • • Illawarra State Conservation Area

       • Budderoo National Park

       • Milton-Ulladulla Subtropical Rainforests (Saving Our Species Project)

• Analyse the effectiveness of these strategies in addressing the identified issues and enhancing ecosystem integrity.

• Summarise your findings and provide a concluding statement on the ecosystem integrity of the subtropical rainforests of the Illawarra-Shoalhaven.

• Use your research on contemporary research and innovation, along with your analyis,  to suggest any recommendations for further research or management.
