My History, Your History, Our History

Girilambone Public School is a small rural school situated 45kms from Nyngan in the village of Girilambone. It was first opened in 1897 to accommodate the growing village with the development of the local copper mine and railway.  Girilambone Public School is a primary school catering for students from kindergarten to year 6 and currently has 17 students in attendance. Our 17 students have all worked together in the researching and developing of this website to share their knowledge of the history of Girilambone in the celebrations of 175 Years of Public Education in NSW.

Country Teacher

NSFA Films
Produced by Film Australia 1975. Written and directed by Philip Robertson. The final day of the 1975 school year at Girilambone Public School in central-western New South Wales. On that day Roger and Glenys Paterson, two young novice teachers and newly weds, were finishing up their first year at Girilambone. They had spent the year teaching the kids, getting to know the locals and becoming part of the fabric of that small community, Roger at the 16 pupil local primary school and Glenys at the high school 50km away in Nyngan. The school year culminates in the Christmas party while the farmers are busy with the harvest and shearing. This gentle film captures the essence of many Australian small country towns as it soaks in the atmosphere of the early summer. With the heat rising there is the familiar seasonal cycle but for the children there is also the unknown prospects of the long and languid holiday break.
