As we move towards the end of another busy and productive term, I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the many successes and opportunities our students have embraced both in and out of the classroom.
Our Show Team continues to make us proud, most recently with their outstanding efforts at Wingham Beef Week. The dedication, skill and commitment shown by our students is a credit to themselves, their families and the staff who support them. These opportunities continue to strengthen our strong agricultural tradition at Gunnedah High School.
Our Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals were also highly successful, with strong participation, school spirit and some outstanding performances. These events continue to highlight the talent, resilience and sportsmanship of our students.
This term has also seen the continuation of our Rural Fire Service Cadet Program, which provides students with valuable life skills, leadership opportunities and pathways into community service. Programs such as this strengthen our commitment to real-world learning and community connection.
Our partnership programs continue to thrive, with Clontarf students recently attending the State of Origin Trip, providing memorable experiences and strengthening cultural connection, engagement and aspiration. Similarly, our STARS Year 11 and Year 12 students attended the Dubbo Camp, building confidence, leadership and connection as they prepare for life beyond school.
A highlight of this term has been the successful introduction of our Didge & Dance Cultural Sessions, which commenced in Week 7 and run each Wednesday through to the end of term. It has been fantastic to see the strong student buy-in and engagement in these sessions, which continue to strengthen cultural identity, pride and connection.
Another exciting development has been the formation of our Junior AECG. I would like to sincerely thank all staff, students and community members involved in bringing this together. The power of student voice in school planning and decision-making cannot be underestimated, and this initiative will play an important role in shaping our future direction.
I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our Careers Advisor, Jacinta Hohnke, who continues to create valuable pathways for our students. Through programs such as Start Your Futures Hair and Beauty and Automotive, Jacinta is helping students explore future career opportunities and build strong foundations for employment and further study.
As we head into the back end of the term, I am looking forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week with our school community and welcoming families to our Parent & Teacher Night on Wednesday 1 July. Both events provide important opportunities to connect, celebrate and continue strengthening the partnerships that support student success.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Gunnedah High School.

Congratulations to Ms Constable on her recent graduation as a qualified Teacher Librarian, completing a Masters-level degree.
We are proud to celebrate this fantastic achievement and the dedication, hard work, and commitment it represents. This milestone is particularly special given that, over the past 12 months, Ms Constable and her husband, Cody, have also built a new home and welcomed their third child.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will continue to have on our school community and library programs.
Our school photos have arrived and have been distributed to students who purchased packages.

Our Reconciliation Assembly, held on Wednesday 27 May, brought our school community together to reflect on the importance of reconciliation and the role we all play in building a more respectful, inclusive, and connected future.
Our Cultural Dance Group performed traditional dances, and we presented student and staff awards (recipients listed below), celebrating Respect, Community Citizenship, and Attitude & Application.
Our ALEC Head Teacher, Amber Winsor, shared why Reconciliation Week is such an important time to reflect.
“Reconciliation is built not in a single assembly or week, but through the everyday choices we make to show respect, kindness, and understanding to those around us,” Amber said.
This year’s theme reminds us that reconciliation requires us to be “All In” – not just during Reconciliation Week, but every day through our actions, relationships, and willingness to listen, learn, and grow together.

Our Gunnedah High Transition Team have been out and about visiting Year 6 students in our local primary schools to support their move into high school.
Students have had the opportunity to ask questions and meet a range of staff who will support them throughout their high school journey, including our Year Advisor, Clontarf, Stars, Learning and Support team, Aboriginal Education Officer, Student Support Officer and School Counsellor.
Some of our current Year 7 students have also joined the visits, helping to answer questions, share their experiences and assist with fun team-building games and activities.
In Term 3, we will be running 'Taster Days' at Gunnedah High where students can spend the day experiencing a variety of learning opportunities and becoming familiar with the high school environment.

We look forward to supporting students as they journey from primary school into high school.
Year 11 and 12 Primary Industries and Agriculture students attended Wingham Beef Week alongside more than 450 students from across the state.
Over the past six months, students worked hard to prepare three Angus steers for competition, with their dedication and commitment producing excellent results. Astro, led by Charlette Keeler, achieved 3rd place in the heavyweight led steer class. In the highly competitive hook section, our school also earned an impressive 3rd place with a score of 79.60/100 for animals weighing between 514–542kg, as well as 10th place in the same category.
Students enjoyed camping at the showground throughout the week and engaged in a wide range of educational activities, including industry seminars on artificial breeding, soil science, animal nutrition, breeder evaluations, farming technologies and ruminant digestion. Students also put their judging skills to the test by assessing live animals before visiting the abattoirs to evaluate primal and retail cuts of meat.
The week concluded with an early morning visit to the abattoirs to view the carcasses of the three steers prepared for competition. It was extremely pleasing to see the quality of meat produced through the hard work and dedication of students studying Agriculture and Primary Industries from Years 9 through to 12.
Students in Mr Moore's 8MAT1 and 8MAT3 performed an investigation at the Ag plots at the end of Week 8 to determine if Mrs Dwyer & Mrs McInerney were running an illegal farming operation by calculating the area of the chicken coop and cattle paddocks to see if they were compliant with requirements for animal spacing and shelter requirements.
Students in both classes successfully applied their hands-on skills and braved the muddy conditions on the day and successfully determined that Mrs Dwyer and Mrs McInerney were in fact NOT running an illegal farm and all animals were well within spacing regulations.
All students enjoyed the experience, albeit a few were a little traumatised after being chased by a few of the resident chickens who were not happy to have them invade their homes.
Thank you to the Science/Ag faculty for letting us visit and explore your space.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Agriculture and Primary Industries students attended the Agricultural Careers Expo at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School, where they engaged with industry professionals, participated in live demonstrations and workshops, and explored a range of employment, training and further education pathways within the agricultural and related sectors.
Students had the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from a variety of organisations and businesses, gaining valuable insights into career opportunities across the agricultural and related industries. Exhibitors included Cotton Australia, Local Land Services, Killara Feedlot, Thomas Foods International, Teys Australia, Ringers from the Top End, TAFE NSW, Kenway and Clark, INCYT, Pursehouse Rural, GrainCorp and GSG Laboratories, along with several universities and training providers.
The event provided students with a valuable opportunity to investigate future study and employment pathways while building connections with industry professionals.
Our Geography students recently enjoyed a fieldwork excursion to Lake Keepit and Manilla Weir, providing them with the opportunity to connect their classroom learning to real-world environments.
Throughout the day, students explored the physical and human features of both locations, investigating topics such as water management, environmental sustainability, weathering, erosion and the importance of waterways to local communities. Students participated in fieldwork activities, made observations and collected information to deepen their understanding of geographical concepts.
The excursion also provided opportunities for students to develop important personal and social capabilities. During a stop at the playground, students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, cooperation and inclusion as they worked together, encouraged one another and engaged positively with their peers. Their respectful behaviour and willingness to support one another was a highlight of the day.
We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented Gunnedah High School. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and positive attitude made the excursion a valuable and enjoyable learning experience for everyone involved.
A special thank you to the staff who supported the excursion and helped create meaningful opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom.
In Week 8, Gunnedah High School had the privilege of hosting the first Junior AECG meeting for 2026, bringing together Aboriginal student leaders from across our local schools.
The day provided students with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, share ideas, and work together on initiatives that will strengthen student voice within their schools and communities.
Students elected to the 2026 Junior AECG Executive team:
President – Matisse
Vice President – Jai
Secretary – Chantelle
Media Coordinator – Ady
Throughout the day, students participated in discussions around issues and opportunities important to young people, developed a survey to gather feedback from their peers, and collaborated on the design of a Junior AECG shirt that will represent the group at future events.
Students also took part in a Smoking Ceremony, learning about its cultural significance and the important role it plays in connection, respect, and wellbeing.
We would like to congratulate all students who attended. Their willingness to contribute, listen to others, and represent their schools with pride was outstanding. It was wonderful to see so many young people stepping forward as leaders and advocates for their peers.
Gunnedah High School is proud to support opportunities that empower Aboriginal students to have a voice, celebrate culture, and shape positive change within their schools and communities.
Gunnedah High School students have been working collaboratively with students from St Xavier’s and St Mary’s to learn dances for NAIDOC Week.
We hosted the first workshop and it was a great success. It was wonderful to see students coming together, sharing ideas, learning from one another, and celebrating culture through dance and performance.
We are excited for the workshops ahead and can't wait to see the amazing performances and opportunities that will come from this collaboration.
A big thank you to everyone involved, we're looking forward to an incredible NAIDOC Week!

Congratulations to our Girls' Tennis Team on their outstanding 6 sets to 2 victory in the semi-final against Guyra Central School.
The girls displayed excellent skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the match, supporting one another and working together to secure the win.
Their strong performance has earned them a place in the Grand Final, which will be played in the coming weeks.
We wish the team the very best of luck as they prepare for this exciting opportunity.
Our annual whole-school Cross Country was recently held at Donnelly Fields, a new location this year due to construction works at the school, providing an exciting change of scenery for students and staff.
The new course proved to be a great success, offering a challenging and enjoyable experience for all participants.
It was fantastic to see such high levels of participation and enthusiasm from students across all year groups. Whether competing for a place at the next level or simply challenging themselves to complete the course, students demonstrated resilience, determination and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.
A big thank you to all staff, students and volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly. Congratulations to all participants, and best wishes to those who have qualified to represent Gunnedah High School at the next stage of competition.

We wish Quade, Oscar, and Marnee the very best as they prepare for Sydney.
The TAFE NSW - Gunnedah ‘Start Your Future’ program provides students with the opportunity to explore potential career pathways through vocational taster courses. The program emphasises the value of hands-on learning and early exposure to future careers.
These students are participating in the automotive program and attend TAFE each Friday. They are pictured here receiving their brand-new tool kits, which support them as they develop their skills and knowledge in the automotive industry.
Year 11 Stars students had the opportunity to participate in an excursion to Dubbo Zoo, where they explored a range of career pathways and employment opportunities within the zoo industry.
During a behind-the-scenes tour, students gained insight into animal care practices and learned about the diverse career journeys of the zookeepers. The zookeepers shared their experiences, explained how they reached their current roles, and provided valuable advice to students as they begin considering their own pathways beyond school.
Students also visited Wellington Caves, where they enjoyed a guided tour of the historic cave system. During the visit, they learned about the history and development of the caves, as well as the various career opportunities associated with tourism, conservation, and scientific research.
Students were fascinated to discover that the caves continue to evolve, with new artefacts and significant historical findings still being uncovered today.
Our Stars Foundation students in Years 7-10 have been working closely with Ryan Marchant to plant bush tucker species that are native to our Gamilaraay land.
They have used the space around the Stars room to establish year group gardens, allowing students to regularly care for and maintain their plants.
In Term 3, students will go on Country to visit local areas such as Porcupine, Blackjack, and the Lagoon to try and find the species they have planted.
Ryan holds a Certificate IV in Ecology and Land Management, specialising in Indigenous Land Management, and is currently completing a Diploma of Conservation and Ecosystem Management.
Clontarf held their annual State of Origin Camp, and it was fantastic event.
The boys enjoyed a touch football match against the teachers, coming away with a well-deserved victory. They also took part in a range of Minute to Win It challenges, which brought plenty of laughs and friendly competition.
One of the highlights was "Pick the Score" competition, where Noah correctly predicted the result and won himself a NSW State of Origin jersey.
The camp was a great opportunity for the boys to connect, have fun, and create lasting memories. Everyone had an awesome time, and are already looking forward to next year's camp.
Our GHS Wellbeing team are working together to ensure all our procedures are following the NSW Anti-Bullying Framework
We will share our updated version once it is completed and ready for 2027.
Year 10, 11 and 12 students from the Gunnedah Shire are eligible to participate in the interactive program as part of NSW Local Government Week (3-9 August).
Local Government Week is an annual initiative, which aims to stimulate interest in local democracy and promote the role local government plays in the community. Council recognises the week by celebrating its employees and how they contribute to life in the Shire.
Mayor Colleen Fuller OAM said the Mayor for a Day program was created to give young people a valuable opportunity to understand the roles, responsibilities, and challenges involved in leading Gunnedah Shire Council.
“Our initiative enables young people to see how things work behind-the-scenes and the importance of not only policies and processes, but also positive relationships,” she said.
“We want our youth to be informed and involved, and this program gives them the opportunity to learn about how we manage things like roads, parks, events, libraries, and planning approval.
“When they understand more about the system we work within, they’re more likely to speak up, join working groups, or advocate for issues they care about.”
To apply, students need to fill in an online form that outlines what they would do if they were Mayor of Gunnedah Shire Council.
A panel will select the students who will be invited to act as Mayor for a Day, tour Council facilities, greet Councillors and senior staff, and meet with Council stakeholders.
To apply for the Mayor for a Day program, apply here.
Applications close 5pm, Friday, 10 July.
