Reflection

Reflecting on portraits

Complete the following reflection activities in a document to share with your teacher.

  • Re-read your definition of 'portrait' from the first lesson in this module. Has your understanding of portraits changed? Explain one new or interesting thing you have learned about the choices artists make when making portrait artworks, and how these choices reflect their intentions.

  • Go to the website for the 2021 Archibald Prize (date accessed 16/08/2021). Pretend you are one of the judges, and select the portrait that you think should have been the winner. Write a short paragraph that justifies your choice.

  • Refer to the Archibald Prize website (date accessed 16/08/2021). Find another four portraits that you think fits the ideas and meaning for each frame. You might restrict yourself to only choosing from previous winners, or click through to view the other finalists for each year's prize.

Write a one-sentence summary of each portrait that explains why you used it as an example for that frame.

Assembling a body of work

In this module, you have made several portrait artworks that use different ideas and techniques to represent people.

Now you will put together a digital collection to display your finished portraits. You or your teacher might choose one of the learning tools from the Digital Learning Selector (date accessed 16/08/2021).

Alternatively, the Gallery Walk (date accessed 16/08/2021) template could be used to arrange and display your artworks.

Display each of your portraits on its own page or slide. For each artwork, complete the following reflection and evaluation activities. You might record your written responses on a separate slide, or underneath your artwork image.

  • Record a citation, including your name, the title of the artwork, the year it was created, the materials used, and its size.

  • Who have you chosen to represent in this portrait? Why did you choose them as your subject?

  • What choices did you make to represent your subject? What ideas about that person have you represented in your portrait?

  • How does your portrait reflect your understanding of one of the frames?

Congratulations, you have completed the module!
