Commerce enables young people to develop knowledge about financial, economic, business, legal, political and employment issues. In this subject, students will increase their ability to research information, apply problem-solving strategies and evaluate options in order to make informed and responsible decisions as individuals and as part of the community.
Students are required to study four core topics within the Commerce Syllabus that will assist them in developing essential skills to negotiate living in our society. The four core topics include:
Consumer and Financial Decisions
The Economic and Business Environment
Employment and Work Futures
Law, Society and Political Involvement
Additionally, students, in consultation with their teacher, can select up to five options from the following list to complement their study in Commerce:
Our Economy
Investing
Promoting and Selling
Running a Business
Law in Action
Travel
Towards Independence
This elective helps to prepare students who have an interest in working in finance, economics or business. Through partnerships with community organisations, students will hear firsthand what is required in running a successful small business. They will explore vital aspects of our society including the legal system, the economy and the purpose of taxation. They will also consider their personal financial habits and make meaningful and achievable saving goals for the future. Studying commerce will educate students on their rights as an employee in an Australian workplace.
The Course Contribution is nil for this subject; however, parents and students should be aware that extra opportunities, such as excursions, will be available for an additional cost.
