The EAST Schools Mathematics Units of Work have been developed to support classroom teachers to explicitly teach the content of the newly reformed NSW Mathematics Syllabus (2023/2024 implementation). Our commitment to explicitly teaching new content in mathematics is grounded in evidence that Explicit Instruction optimises learning, that it is one of the most effective teaching practices and that it benefits all students and positively impacts achievement across a range of content areas, including mathematics (AERO, 2023).
“Explicit instruction is a systematic, engaging and success-oriented teaching approach. It involves fully explaining and effectively demonstrating what students need to learn. This approach to instruction accords with what we know about the learning process, and empirical evidence on the most effective teaching practices. Learning new information happens most effectively and efficiently when teaching is clear, systematic and does not leave students to construct or discover knowledge and skills without guidance.” (Explicit Instruction Optimises Learning, AERO, 2023).
