Learning Intention

We are learning to use a KWL chart to show prior knowledge and learning directions

Inquiry Questions

What do you already know about rocks, soil and landscapes?

Outcomes

Science: ST2-1WS-S

KWL - What do I know, what do I wonder and what did I learn?

Invite the students to complete the first two columns of the KWL in their student workbook. This activity will provide the students with the opportunity to brainstorm what they know about the content and key inquiry questions. It will provide a chance to identify incorrect preconceptions and also provide an assessment opportunity after the completion of the ‘Learn’ column after the excursion.

Some prompting questions could be:

  • What do you know about rocks, soil and landscapes?

  • What different types of rocks are there? Which ones are found in your area?

  • What is soil made up of? Are there different types of soil? Where do you find different types of soils?

  • What will the landscape look like in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park?

  • What causes soil erosion? How can we stop it?
