Biology, Chemistry and Physics are highly specialised and challenging subjects that require students to arrive with a strong grasp of the scientific method, and a detailed understanding of the relevant concepts covered in stage 4 and 5 science.
Investigating Science, whilst still a challenging course, is an opportunity for students to further develop their skills as scientists. These skills can act as a foundation for students who intend to study another science subject, improving their ability to apply critical thinking and employ the scientific method in their chosen discipline. Students who pair Investigating Science with another Science subject, say that they feel better equipped to tackle the rigours of the course.
For students interested in science but not pursuing it long-term, Investigating Science in Stage 6 offers a great chance to explore diverse scientific concepts and cultivate critical thinking, scepticism, data analysis, and an understanding of science's societal role.
Please access the Science Subject Selection informative Canvas page in the Science Canvas course called: Subject Selection Information Page found in the General Resources module (parents can access this page as well). There will be a link to this on the lead up to Subject Selection in your Year 10 Science Course Announcements for easier access.
Feel free to talk to Year 11 and 12 Investigating Science students for feedback.
The pantheon above illustrates that Science in high school follows a progression from Year 7 to 12. Stage 4 (Years 7-8) Science and Stage 5 (Year 9-10) Science form the foundation of key scientific concepts and skills in all Stage 6 (Year 11-12) Senior Science courses (Investigating Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth and Environmental Science). In order to effectively do well in Stage 6 Science, students must demonstrate mastery of Stage 4 and 5 Science. For example, if you have not done well in Stage 4 and 5 Science, you will find Stage 6 Science very difficult to undertake. Finally, these Stage 6 Science courses then form the pillars (basics) to tertiary Science education, should students choose to do Science or a related degree at university.
