There are many devices suitable as a BYOD tool for students to use, however, there are some which are not suitable. Please read the information in this section to ensure you are buying the right device for your child's educational needs.
When deciding on which laptop to purchase for your child to use at school, make sure that the device meets the specifications listed in the Richmond High School BYOD Specifications document (linked on the left).
If you purchase a device through one of our purchasing portals (linked below), we have ensured that the listed devices meet our school's required specifications. However, it is not required that you choose one of these devices.
If you purchase from a different supplier, please print out the specifications sheet and take it with you to ensure you come away with a suitable device.
There are many options for purchasing a device. We have partnerships with three providers - LWT, JB Hi-Fi and HP. Their purchasing portals are linked below, with the school codes listed below the link. These portals enable you to quickly and easily purchase a device online at a competitive price.
There are also many retail stores which also offer suitable devices throughout the year.
Please be aware we have updated our policy to now enable students to also use Google Chromebooks and Apple Mac devices. However, there are some things to be aware of with these devices. Please go to the FAQ section below to ensure you are fully informed before purchasing one of these devices.
The purchasing portals below are for students attending Richmond High School.
The same school codes and discounts apply to all students from Years 7-12.

Students can download free Microsoft Office and Adobe products (via their det student portal), so there is no need to purchase/pay extra for this software.
Please refer to the information below for directions on how to download these two software applications.
The enterprise agreement with Microsoft allows students to download the full suite of Microsoft Office applications for use on their personal BYOD devices. These complete applications complement the provision of access to Microsoft Office 365 or “Office in the Cloud” now available. The Office 365 software and associated mobile apps can be used on a limited number of devices owned or used by students of the DEC at no charge.
The DoE’s enterprise agreement with Adobe allows students to download and install Adobe Creative Cloud (and some other software) for free on one personally owned device.

Who pays for the technology devices brought to school?
These devices will be purchased by and remain the property of the family.
Will students need access to internet at home?
Ideally yes. It would be helpful to have some form of internet access (wired or wireless) in order for a student to make full use of school resources from home, as well the multitude of resources available on the World Wide Web. But, it is not required in order for a child to use a personal computing device at school.
Does Richmond High School suggest any other considerations?
It may be wise to acquire theft or hazard insurance. If purchasing a new computing device for a child to use at school, we suggest purchasing the extended warranty. Also a good protective cover and a spare charging cord are advised.
Who is responsible for damage, loss, or theft of devices your child brings to school?
Families must stress the responsibilities their children have when bringing their own computing devices to school. Year 7 students often have to be reminded not to just throw their schoolbag down on the ground with their device in it as it can cause damage to the device. Any devices students bring to school are their sole responsibility. Richmond Agricultural College takes no responsibility to search for lost or stolen devices nor is there any assumption of financial responsibility by Richmond Agricultural College for damaged, lost, or stolen personal computing devices.
Who is responsible for any repairs or updating to personal computing devices?
Students and/or their families are responsible for their personal computing devices at all times. Richmond High School does not have the technology support staff to repair or update personal computing devices.
Is an Apple Mac device suitable?
Families should be aware that BYOD Apple Mac devices experience initial connectivity issues. However, after set up and initial connection to the School Wifi system, there has been very few problems. However, there are limited Apple Mac devices used within the school (teachers mostly use Windows devices) and if a student is experiencing difficulties, teachers may not be able to offer technical support to students in the classroom.
Is a Google Chromebook device suitable?
Chromebooks are G Suite educational based devices, which do not come with Microsoft 365 applications as a downloadable option for free software. Although Microsoft 365 can be accessed online, this version comes with limited tools. Therefore, they are not recommended for Senior students, but satisfy all device specifications for junior students. Chromebooks do not support the playing of recreational games online.
