Richmond High School has had a highly successful ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) program since 2018.
With the impacts of Covid-19 on education since 2020, the important role technology plays in today's society from school through to work has become even more evident.
All students from Years 7 -12 are required to bring a fully charged laptop and
charger to school every day.
Please note that mobile phones and tablets/iPads are not considered suitable devices. This supports Richmond High School in providing rich learning experiences that effectively integrate technology into our classrooms with teaching programs. The placing of a computing device in the hands of each student will enable many of our teachers to radically change the way they approach lessons.
This website aims to provide key information to our Richmond High School learning community regarding our BYOD Program requirements, purchasing portals and implementation in our classrooms.
This handbook provides an explanation of how the BYOD program operates, sets out what is expected of parents and students, and provides information about the school’s minimum device specifications.
This handbook is an instructional guide to support students with the day-to-day navigation using various online learning platforms and tools. It also has helpful tips for general use.
This policy outlines the Richmond High School policy on the day-to-day use of laptops and the NSW Government policy on the general responsibilities of students.
All Richmond High School students must read and agree to this document in the company of an adult unless otherwise excused by the principal.
What is BYOD?
“Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to technology models where students bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning. A personally owned device is any technology device brought into the school and owned by a student (or the student’s family), staff or guests” (Alberta Education, 2012).
All teachers have participated in extensive Professional Development workshops to ensure they have the skills and technology expertise required to integrate technology into their lessons but also the knowledge of how to utilise technology as a pedagogical tool to enhance the learning experience for our students.
The Australian Curriculum in New South Wales explicitly addresses the need for students to meaningfully engage with technology to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at the School, and in their lives beyond Richmond High School.
The integration of ICT capabilities in teaching, learning and assessment in NSW syllabuses can lead to enhanced outcomes for students, and:
Support the interactive process of teaching, learning and assessment in NSW schools
Develop the knowledge, skills, understanding, attitudes and behaviours to assist students to live and work successfully in the 21st century.
ICT Capability supports students to be effective users of technology.
Digital Technologies more specifically aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure that, individually and collaboratively, students:
Design, create, manage and evaluate sustainable and innovative digital solutions
Use computational thinking and the key concepts of abstraction; data collection, representation and interpretation; specification and algorithms
Confidently use digital systems to efficiently and effectively automate the transformation of data into information and to creatively communicate ideas
Apply protocols and legal practices that support safe, ethical and respectful communications and collaboration
All students are expected to bring their own fully charged laptop device and charger to school every day.
The school makes recommendations as to the model of device students may choose to bring (or, you can bring a device of your own choosing that meets our device specifications). Students are required to sign a Student Agreement that sets out how the device can be used at school. Members of the school staff (e.g. BYOD Coordinator, Year Advisor, Deputy Principal, Technical Support Officer) are available to answer questions and to give assistance. However, the school does not manage, support, own, or warranty the device – the device remains owned by families.
