The scope of Blue Gate Garden TV evolved as the project progressed. However, at the core of the project was the question that launched us...How does the community protect the local bee population?
Just like the Koala is a symbol of environmental protection we wanted our artwork to not only be a reminder of our work but to be a symbol of sustainability and our pursuit of a better future for the children of Hamilton Public School. When students were surveyed and brainstormed ideas, the bee and its striking colours were a reoccurring theme that they wanted to bring to life in the artwork.
The importance of bees to our ecosytem and food security combined with their bold and recognisable colour scheme made the selection of the bee theme a simple choice. The goal was to paint our Koala using two colours, black and yellow, with adjustments for shading and highlights for impact and emphasis. If we can put in place practices that protect bees in our own back yard, then the impact can permeate through the community and positively contribute toward acheiving SDG 15, 2, 11 and 13.
