Towards a Higher Place
Towards a Higher Place
This term has just flown by, and we are now preparing for the end of Term 1 while making preparations for Term 2. Please remember to update your calendars with upcoming events and save the date for our annual art show. Parents of students in Years 3–6 are invited to a Meet the Teacher session next week. We hope you can join us!
In our commitment to creating safe and positive learning spaces, NSW public schools are introducing a revised Student code of conduct. This revised Student code of conduct sets clear expectations for student behaviour during all school activities, including online and off-site.
From Term 2 this year, our classrooms will start to display new posters outlining the revised Student code of conduct. Parents and carers and students will be asked to acknowledge the Student code of conduct annually to support respectful and positive behaviour.
Together, let us build a great school community!
For more information, please visit Student code of conduct
Thank you for supporting a respectful and positive school community.
We are in preparations for travel and accommodation for the Year 5/6 creative arts camp to be held in Dubbo. A message went out to all families earlier in the week inviting at least one parent/caregiver to attend a meeting to discuss transport and travel arrangements as well as costs for camp and travel, and we would appreciate your support in attending this meeting.
What: Year 5/6 Parent Meeting
When: Monday 30 March
Time: 3.10pm
Where: School Hall
On Friday the 6th of March, we had the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon. Milton Dick, MP and The Hon. Michael McCormack MP, come and visit our school. They talked about what happens in the Parliament House, such as, where certain people sit, the required uniform, rules, and much more. Then Piper and Zavier the school captains, Mr Milton Dick, Michael McCormack and Mrs Arabin got to sign their names in this special book that at the end of the year was getting displayed at Parliament House!
After a while they said that they had to leave but had one more thing to show us! They told everyone, even the playgroup, to come out to the oval.
Then they pulled out the one and only Parliament House flag! All of 3-6, teachers and parents from playgroup rolled out the sides of the flag and it turns out, the flag was actually as big as a double decker bus!

State Swimming
With these fantastic results, we have a number of students heading to Sydney early next term for the State Swimming Carnival in both the small school relay and in individual events. This is such an achievement for our students and school. We are incredibly proud of these results and we must acknowledge the dedication of our Binalong Swim Club coaches, Ben Spencer, Jan Giles and Kirsten Pack, who have been promoting, encouraging and inspiring our swimmers, creating opportunities for them to develop their swimming skills and passion. We must also acknowledge these student’s families who travel around the region supporting their children and encouraging them to develop resilience and determination through sport.
The following students are off to the State Swimming Carnival:
Ian Spencer - Jun Boy 50m Butterfly (1st), Jun Boy 200m IM (1st)
Oscar Coble - Jun Boy 50m f/style (1st), Peter Dobson Relay
Vincent Edwards - 11 year boy 50m butterfly (1st)
Piper Coble, Zavier Brayshaw, Cooper Edwards and Oscar Coble - Peter Dobson Relay Team
On Wednesday, 4th March, our entire school enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Bowning Public School for a fun and educational day. While our teaching staff participated in Professional Learning around teaching and leadership in Aboriginal Education, students engaged in a range of exciting activities, making the most of this shared learning experience with friends from Bowning and Wee Jasper.
The day began with Mr Godman, who dazzled students with his incredible collection of shells. Students learned about the diversity of shells, their unique attributes, and fascinating stories of how certain shells served as currency in various countries. Everyone then had the chance to unleash their creativity by making their own shell sculptures using air-dry clay—a hands-on activity that brought their learning to life.
Next, Ms Kemp guided the students through an engaging STEM adventure focused on engineering and the design process. Students explored critical thinking and problem-solving skills, then tested their knowledge by creating "egg" mazes. We are happy to report that all eggs remained safely intact!
Stage 3 students took their STEM learning even further by experimenting with robotics to engineer and draw their own designs—a fun and futuristic challenge that sparked creative thinking.
The day concluded with Mrs Cassidy’s much-anticipated Landcare session, this time delving into the wonderful world of worms. Students discovered the vital role worms play in our environment and observed these hardworking garden friends up close.
Everyone had a fantastic time, and the feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. They cherished the opportunity to collaborate and learn with friends from Bowning and Wee Jasper and are already looking forward to the next PLC Day!
On Friday we held our Harmony Day celebrations. During our library time k-6 came together as one group to celebrate and learn together. We created Harmony Day badges and wrote acrostic poems. Year 3-6 joined their k-2 buddies to make an artwork. We discussed and wrote down things that we believed would make the world a better place. These activities made everyone smile and feel happy working together. Piper worked with Mrs Arabin to develop the activities. All kids had a gold coin donation, Piper and Annabelle collected all of the money and then put it up in the office to send it to Stewart house. Year six decided that the money they raised would go to Stewart house because some of our kids have been going there for a couple of years now so we thought we would sport them in making it happen.
Congratulations to our Year 3-6 students who entered a collaborative artwork into the Yass Show art section. The theme this year was "Our Town" which sparked great discussions about what makes Binalong so special. We titled the piece "Our Town, Our Memories", which really celebrated each student's unique perspectives. We received a second place in the Small Schools category. Our artwork will be displayed at our Art Show next term, if you didn't get the chance to see it at the Yass Show. Our K-2 students have also been working on their own artwork that didn't quite get finished in time for the Show, however you will get a chance to see them displayed in the hall.
Zavier has been busy on the sporting field trialling for Touch Football and Soccer. Zavier made it to the possibles and probables, although just missed out on the Riverina Touch Football team with approximately 100 students attending the day, Zavier played incredibly well and gave it his best. Good luck to Zavier who is off again tomorrow for some further combined zone soccer trials.
Week 10 is a busy week with School Photos, Assembly, and our Easter crafts and Easter Hat Parade.
See below for uniform requirements. Contact the school or P&C if you require any spare uniform items to purchase or borrow.

Students in Year 3-6 have been having lots of fun learning their choreography for Southern Tablelands Dance Festival with Chris, bucket drumming with Mrs Patterson, participating in STEM challenges, time down in Bush School, and of course their regular classroom routines.
This term, students in Years 3/4 have been learning all about the properties of 2D shapes. Students have explored how to classify shapes based on their sides and angles, and have identified different types of polygons, including quadrilaterals and parallelograms. We have investigated the characteristics that make each shape unique, and used mathematical language to describe them. Students have also experimented with creating tessellating patterns, using their understanding of shape properties to design patterns that repeat without gaps or overlaps.
Binalong Public School students will again proudly lead our community Anzac Day service on Saturday 25 April with our School Captains, Zavier and Piper, leading the service. Students have been learning The Ode in Wiradjuri with Keiran Hearne, and look forward to sharing this on the day.
Students are asked to wear their full summer school uniform (if weather is still fine) and meet at the front of the hotel by 10.00am.
The Road Safety Program plays a vital role in implementing treatments designed to reduce deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads, with particular emphasis on helping protect vulnerable pedestrians and motorists. The Yass Valley Council were successful in securing a grant to upgrade and make road safety improvements including installation of shared path, footpath, bus bay, sealed shoulder and parking installation adjacent to Binalong Public School on Dickinson Street at Binalong ($283,000). We are expecting these works to commence in the second half of the year.
Dickinson street is a narrow busy street in the afternoons. To support road safety and help us get all children home safe and sound, we ask that families do the following:
The first car to arrive is asked to park here after going around the tree at the end of the street - this helps to reduce the need to reverse in a school zone and helps to improve the flow of traffic allowing cars to pull in behind the first car and move forward when cars in front exit.
If your child needs to cross the school road, please collect them from the school path.
Follow the NSW laws around car seat and seatbelt safety.
Ensure that your child wears their helmet when riding or scooting to school and help educate them with safe riding behaviours.
Schools promote sun-smart behaviour by encouraging students and staff to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide. Students will be encouraged to apply sunscreen at school each day. If your child has a particular sensitivity to generic sunscreen, please provide your own.
Please ensure that your child has their school hat with them each day.
Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide
Slip on a shirt
Slop on the 30+ sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Seek shade or shelter
Slide on some sunnies.
In addition to the ongoing grant and program initiatives aimed at enhancing school safety, our school will be receiving installation of a new colorbond boundary fence. This will replace the existing, damaged ringlock fencing along the sides and rear boundaries of the school.
As part of this fence upgrade and broader improvements to the school’s entry areas, new fencing will also be installed along a section of the front boundary. Furthermore, enhancements to the front entrance will create a welcoming, sheltered waiting area beneath the covered walkways for families and visitors.
These improvements have been thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the heritage character of our buildings and courtyards, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
We work closely with our Assets Manager to ensure that every application and decision regarding school upgrades, enhancements, repairs, and maintenance is carefully considered.
If you have any suggestions or ideas about improvements you would like to see at our school—whether related to facilities, amenities, or the school environment—please share your thoughts with Mrs Arabin. Your input is valued and helps us continue to create an inspiring learning space for our students, and a welcoming space for our community.

SRC Report - By Piper
This term we have had lots of delicious meal deals with pies, sausage rolls, hot dogs, and a special end-of-term nachos. We would really appreciate it if, when your child is having a lunch order, you put their order in before the cut-off time. We have also been selling icecreams on Tuesday for two dollars – don’t forget! This term we have raised $184 selling ice-creams, $47.75 in meal deals, and together we raised $61 on Harmony Day which we will donate to Stewart House.
In Week 7 we had a trip with Bowning Public School, where the kids enjoyed activities with Mr Godman, Mrs Cassidy, and Mrs Kemp. We split off into groups: K-2, 3-4, and 5-6. We learned about shells with Mr Godman – he even brought some in for us to handle! We also learnt about worms with Mrs Cassidy; lucky enough, she dug up two types of worms from her garden so we could hold them and compare them! With Mrs Kemp we did some STEM activities. We used a robot, stuck a pen to it, and had to code it to make it draw. The kids really enjoyed it!
This year, the athletics carnival will be held in Term 2, Week 5, on Thursday 21 May at the Binalong Oval. You’d better put it on your calendars! We will have meal deals, novelty games, and preschool and parent races. Make sure to wear your fastest joggers!
Well done to the following state finalists: Ian (200m IM, breaststroke), Vincent (breaststroke), and the relay team: Piper, Zavier, Oscar, Cooper.
In Week 9 we brought new flags for our school. We got a new Aboriginal Flag, an Australian Flag, and a Torres Strait Islander Flag! The Year Sixes put them up and got a photo with our beautiful new flags. Once the other kids saw them, they were just as shocked as we were! We have also been learning Wiradjuri with Keiran. He has been kind enough to come in every Thursday to teach us. All of the students have been very fluent.
The SRC purchased a set of new flags for our flagpole. We think they look great!
