Extracurricular Opportunities

Welcome to the - Blaxland High School MADD Program

We have an exciting Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts programs for all students to enjoy.

This year students have the opportunity to be apart of the following extracurricular activities.

Blaxland High School Orchestra

BHS Orchestra 2018 will be a combination of ALL available instruments without restriction. Imagine instruments of an Orchestra, regular Band instruments like Saxophone’s, bolstered by rock instruments, strings and keyboards with a few exotic instruments on the side. If your child wants to participate, please encourage them to join.

Requirements

Students will need to able to read a little music, attend rehearsals on a regular basis and be available for performances at Music Nights and perhaps other functions throughout the year. Having their own instrument will mean they can begin playing immediately, HOWEVER if they have played an instrument in the past (borrowed from their previous school) and would like to continue, I can help try and organise acquisition of another to suit your budget.

Auditions

For the most part, standard instruments can have multiples e.g. 4 Flutes but some others are simply impractical and will therefore be auditioned. These will be Drums, Percussion, Keyboard & Guitars. ALL others will be on probation but able to participate. What will be auditioned will be the position of First Desk of each instrument. These players will be, in effect, in charge of all others who play that instrument and will act as a mentor to others to help their development. Also, these musicians will be highlighted in the ensemble through solo lines and even have whole pieces that highlight their virtuosity.

Multi-Instrumentalists

Multi-instrumentalists are encouraged to swap instruments at times as the music dictates and keyboard players will often play lines for other unavailable instruments – e.g. Harp, Oboe, Harpsichord etc. Also, some pieces will require singers who could possibly come from the ensemble personnel.

TRANSITION DANCE COMPANY (Yrs 5/6)

Students from primary schools in the lower mountains can audition in February each year for a place in this company. This company assists students in their transition to high school, with rehearsals at the high school once a week with a technique class and the learning of choreography. Senior Vocal Ensemble

The BHS Senior Vocal Ensemble (SVE) is a 50-strong SATB choral ensemble that represents the school in a vast array of concerts, events, ceremonies and eisteddfods throughout the year. It runs as a regular Roll Call group with four rehearsals per week in addition to performing the National Anthem on assemblies. There is a mix of vocalists from Years 8-12, with around 60% of the group in Years 11 and 12. There is a much higher degree of musicality and challenge to the choral material performed in this ensemble, and selected members have to display complete commitment to their singing, as well as the musical standard, culture and legacy of the group.

We are especially proud of the high numbers of boys involved in the ensemble over the last 17 years, and BHS is well known for its male vocal strength in the region and beyond.

Students are selected for the Senior Vocal Ensemble from participation in a combination of the Junior Vocal Ensemble and the Voiceworks Electives in Stage 4 and 5, in addition to the following criteria; -

*Record of consistent participation and attendance in school musical initiatives

* Sight-reading skills and musical literacy

* Solo singing ability

* Harmonising skill and experience

* Commitment to Stage 6 Music courses or extra-curricular equivalent

* The ability to operate and thrive in group settings

BHS SVE are the current Penrith, Hawkesbury and Bathurst Eisteddfod Open Schools Choral Champions, with outstanding members going on to become featured artists at the School Spectacular, TDP and PULSE initiatives.

Junior Vocal Ensemble:

The BHS Junior Vocal Ensemble (JVE) is a Year 7-10 CAPA initiative that has been active for the last 18 years. It is the biggest high school vocal group in the region, with approximately 65 members.

The ensemble performs mixed voice and SATB repertoire with a focus on stylistic variety, improving sight-reading skills and promoting mentorship and the cultural values of the performing arts at BHS.

Students do not have to audition, however an 80% attendance rate is required to represent the school at eisteddfods and other concerts.

JVE is a pathway to the Senior Vocal Ensemble for singers who demonstrate more sophisticated skills and a high degree of commitment towards their musical literacy. Part leaders are appointed and Platinum and Gold Certificates provided for members who complete the four year “journey”.

JVE is the current Junior School Choral Champion of the Penrith Eisteddfod and in 2016 was runner-up at the Bathurst Eisteddfod behind our own SVE!

Bhukelective

The Bhukelective is the Blaxland High School Ukelele Collective, and was established in 2015.

There are currently 35 members from Yr 7-12, and it is a truly representative BHS group that embraces inclusivity and a culture of community and performance.

Students can join the ensemble, so long as they maintain a consistent rate of attendance and show a willingness to involve themselves in a range of school based and community events.

The material is classic and modern pop/rock songs with 4-part harmonies. The group has almost 2 hours of repertoire at this stage.

Rehearsals are every Tuesday Lunch in Music Room 2, conducted by Mr Leishman. You may borrow a ukulele if you don’t have one!

The group has represented BHS in 2016 and 2017 at both The Australia Day Glenbrook Celebrations, The Blue Mountains Ukelele Festival and the 2016 Blaxland Explorers’ Day and Glenbrook Festivals. We also regularly perform on school Music Nights and for the residents of Buckland Nursing Home.
