Welcome to the Burn 2 Learn app: Instructional guide

The Burn 2 Learn app has been designed to support the delivery of the Burn 2 Learn (B2L) program. This instructional guide will explore the app in terms of where to find it, it's features and how to use the app as a tool to promote and maintain student engagement and motivation.

Download the app

  • The 'Burn 2 Learn' app can be downloaded from the App store (iOS) or Google Play store (Android).

  • It is compatible with both Apple (iPhone and iPad) and Android devices.

  • The app download may require a Wi-Fi connection so we encourage students and teachers to download and install the app while connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Simply search ‘burn 2 learn’ in the search bar to access the app download.

Request school code

  • To be able to register on the B2L app you will need to request a school code.

  • Request a school code by completing this Microsoft Form.

  • A school code will be emailed to you.

Register an account

  • In order to access the complete functionality of the app, you are required to register an account.

  • Select 'register B2L'


Enter your details:

  • Email address.

  • Create a password.

  • The school code that was emailed to you.

  • A verification code will be sent to your email address, this is needed to finalise your registration.

  • The email address you register will be the address summary reports of workouts will be sent to.

Set up your profile and overview

Once registration is complete, you will need to set up your profile.

Setting up a profile will enable students to monitor their progress over the course of the program. Once the profile has been set up once, an age-predicted max heart rate will be calculated based on each individual’s profile information. This is an important process to enable the correct functioning of the app. Students will also need to enter their first and last name, and their gender. Once the details are entered, a profile will be created in the app. An overview of the B2L dashboard is provided below.

Begin a session

To start a new B2L session, click on the ‘new session’ button from the dashboard. There are 3 options for a Burn 2 Learn session:

  1. Teacher's class session

  2. Solo session

  3. Group session


Please note: Students will require heart rate monitors (HRM) that can be connected to devices via bluetooth.

Teacher's class session

Teacher’s class sessions are the fastest and therefore the preferred method for conducting B2L sessions using the HR monitors. Teacher's class sessions involve the teacher setting up the class on the app.

Please note: Class sessions can only be performed on either a tablet or iPad.

To start a Teacher’s class session B2L session, follow these steps:



  1. Enter your class data via the Burn 2 Learn admin website.

2. Select 'create teacher class sesion' from the drop down menu.


3. Select your class from the list.

4. Student names will appear on the screen.

A green tick next to the student's name indicates their HRM is connected.


5. Configure the session by adding exercise and rest intervals, total number of intervals and warm-up duration.


6. Begin the session.

Display the data on the board in the classroom if possible to promote intensity and increase motivation. The app contains a leaderboard feature to provide data feedback on performance.

Solo session

To start a solo session, select the ‘new session’ button and then ‘create solo session’ button from the dashboard. Alternatively, you can select create solo session by accessing the menu in the top left corner, or by swiping from the dashboard.

A quick start up guide is provided below. Ensure heart rate monitors are fitted correctly before setting up a B2L session.

  1. Select 'create solo session' from the drop down menu.

2. To begin a Solo session, first create a name for the session followed by the desired HIIT workout type and your session details

3. To connect the heart rate monitor (HRM) for a Solo session, click the 'green + symbol' and find your HRM. Typically, the HRM that appears at the top will be the one closest to the phone/device.

Once added, select 'start session'.

4. Ensure students are ready to begin prior to commencing the session as there is only a 10 second countdown before it begins.

5. The workout screen will provide a variety of individual data for feedback throughout the session while informing of the upcoming exercises/intervals.

Group session

When creating a group session, a unique session code will be generated. Students can select to share this code with other groups, or continue to work in their own group. By joining a group session, all individual workouts will be compiled into one report, rather than separate group reports.

Summaries of how to set up a group session are provided below.

  1. Select 'create group session' from the drop down menu.

When a new group session is created, a unique session code will be generated.



2. Students enter unique session code for their group.

3. Hold device close to each group member to connect HRM.

Enter student details and select '+' to add to group workout.

Once all members are connected, select 'start session' to begin.

Accessing workout reports

At the end of each workout session, a workout report will be generated. The workout report will show students their average heart rate, and % max heart rate over the entire session, as well as within each individual interval. Students will also be sent a workout report via email, once connected to the internet. Students can access previous workout reports by selecting the menu button, and then selecting ‘reports’. An example report is displayed below.
