This is the teacher notes page identifying the outcomes addressed in these lessons. Copy each lesson link and send it to your students. For printable versions of these materials log into the teacher information section of the Department of Education.
Students will:
use and interpret the terminology of data: categorical, numerical, discrete, continuous, census and sample
collect different data types
investigate a variety of ways to visually represent data
reflect on aspects that provide clear communication with visual data representations
research data and design an infographic to communicate a message.
Students will:
be able to select and create the appropriate graph for the data type collected.
Outcomes:
MA4-1WM communicates and connects mathematical ideas using appropriate terminology, diagrams and symbols
MA4-3WM recognises and explains mathematical relationships using reasoning
MA4-19SP collects, represents and interprets single sets of data, using appropriate statistical displays
Students will:
use and interpret the terminology of data: categorical, numerical, discrete, continuous, census and sample
collect different data types
draw their own visual representation of collected data.

Extension option
An alternative activity on creating or drawing different types of graphs to suit the different data types is included and can be used in conjunction with any of the other lessons.
Further extension options
Teachers can provide access to the Stage 5 Mathematics – Week C unit on Single variable data analysis. This unit covers the concepts of: mean, median, mode and range, quartiles and interquartile range, box plots and standard deviation.
