Another busy fortnight at school with many wonderful successes to acknowledge!
Congratulations to Mrs. Talevski on her recent appointment as a permanent Assistant Principal at our school. Having successfully secured the position through the Merit selection process, we are thrilled that her professionalism and dedication—demonstrated during her relieving role—have been recognised with this well-deserved permanent appointment.
In celebration of Gifted Awareness Week, we are excited to highlight the wide range of extracurricular activities available to our students that nurture their unique talents and interests. From public speaking competitions and opportunities to be MC at Department concerts and events, local inter-school chess tournaments, Putney Press Gang, ICAS Competitions, drama, dance and music ensembles and of course PSSA Sport pathways to regional and state levels. We have implemented HPGE groups on Thursdays in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. These opportunities are designed to challenge and inspire gifted learners.
By providing these valuable activities, our students can explore their passions, collaborate with peers, and develop critical thinking and leadership skills beyond the classroom. We encourage our students to take advantage of these enriching experiences as part of our commitment to supporting their giftedness and fostering a vibrant, inclusive learning community.
I was delighted to see our drama ensemble shine in last week’s Combined Schools Musical, Mary Poppins. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to collaborate with talented peers from across the state. I’m sure parents would agree that the production was of an exceptional standard and thoroughly entertaining.
Congratulations to Mrs Ignazzi, whose passion and talent for drama continue to inspire and nurture our students by providing them with rich and rewarding experiences. Our drama ensemble is currently rehearsing another original play written by Mrs Ignazzi, with hopes of being selected for the Sydney North Lights Up Drama Festival.
We celebrate Selin A, who was recently accepted into the inaugural 2026 Sydney North Primary Drama Ensemble. This exciting opportunity for our senior students is yet another testament to Mrs Ignazzi’s dedication and support.
We are proud to announce that Irene H has been selected to perform a solo clarinet piece at the 2026 State Music Festivals. She will be featured in the Primary Proms Brindabella Concert, taking place early September at the Sydney Opera House.
Congratulations to Toby S and the Sydney North Boys Hockey team on their outstanding achievement as champions at the NSWPSSA Primary Hockey Championships held in Bathurst last week. The team remained undefeated in their pool, securing 5 wins and 1 draw.
The thrilling final saw Sydney North narrowly defeat the Hunter team 2-1.
This outstanding achievement is a wonderful experience for Toby, who is still recovering from just how chilly Bathurst was!
Congratulations to our Stage 2 and 3 school finalists who presented their speeches in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition last Friday.
Stage 2
Harper C, Ben C, Shreem K, Leighton L, Zuhal T.
Stage 3
Samara A, Eshal A, Caellum G, Irene H, Elina J, Dev K, Laura Q.
The teachers had the very difficult task of selecting the two winners from each stage. I was most impressed with the thoughtful content of the speeches and the confidence demonstrated by the speakers.
Congratulations to the winners who were announced early this week:
Stage 2
Harper C and Leighton L
Stage 3
Dev K and Laura Q
We have already hosted two school tours, with two more planned for prospective parents and students eager to explore what Putney PS has to offer.
Our Open Day is scheduled for August 4th, followed by Orientation sessions later in the year.
If your child is starting school next year, we encourage you to enrol as soon as possible to help us with planning for 2027. We’re pleased to see strong interest from Out of Area families, as Putney is currently accepting enrolments beyond our local catchment. However, we recommend that families contact their local public school first to ensure all options are considered.
Our upcoming Athletics Carnival Years 3-6 (Year 2 - 8 year olds) is just around the corner, and we are excited to host a successful event for our students. To ensure everything runs smoothly, we warmly invite parents to volunteer and assist throughout the day.
The carnival is on Tuesday 9th June at Dunbar Park. Your support makes a huge difference and helps create a memorable experience for our students.
If you are available to help and haven’t yet indicated your availability on the permission note, please contact your child’s teacher. The more volunteers to assist means the load can be shared. Thank you in advance for your continued support and involvement in our school community!
Is a time to remember the past policies of forced child removal, and reflect on the sad and painful stories of the Stolen Generations. It is a time to recognise the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the power of saying Sorry.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day and reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements. The week starts and ends with two important dates in our history:
27th May– in 1967, 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’ in a referendum, giving the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and count them in the census.
3rd June – in 1992, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s special relationship with the land. This paved the way for land rights and Native Title.
Mrs Fowler and I attended the Ryde/Cammeray local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (EACG) meeting last week. The meeting provides local educators to share and celebrate what is being achieved in a way of reconciliation in our local schools.
Ryde Cammeray Culture Connection Day will take place once again this year at the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre, located on Wallumattagal Country on Thursday 25th June.
The NPSS Student Survey is provided to NSW public schools to capture insights from Years 3-6 students about their experiences at school. The survey covers a range of topics, including student engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school, and is one way that students can have a voice in their education. Survey results provide schools with actionable data to drive school planning, reporting and excellence, helping to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
A notification via School Bytes was sent to parents early this week with an opt out form if you do not wish your child to participate.
The Department offers the NPSS Parent Survey to provide schools with valuable insights from parents and carers about their experiences with their child’s school, and of their child’s learning at home. The survey covers a range of topics, including communication, inclusion, wellbeing, and how the school supports learning and positive behaviour. Survey results provide schools with actionable data to drive school planning, reporting and excellence, helping to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
The survey also allows the department to observe trends and better understand what works best to promote positive outcomes for students, helping to shape effective policies and programs so that every student is known, valued and cared for in our schools, a key priority of Our Plan for NSW Public Education.
An email via School Bytes was sent this week to parents with details regarding access to the survey. I appreciate in advance your participation in the survey.
With the arrival of colder mornings, there has been a notable influx of jumpers and jackets in our Lost Property. If your child is missing any items, please take a moment to check the Lost Property area. The area is sorted regularly and clearly named belongings help ensure they find their way back home!
We are proud to celebrate the many talents and achievements of our students and look forward to the exciting opportunities still to come this term.
Mrs Brooks
Principal
This term Stage Two students are close reading Penguin Bloom. This autobiography examines an Australian family's life and how they each make sense of a terrible accident. Students are responding to the themes of resilience with great text to self examples. They are also developing empathy in understanding why the main protagonist acts the way they do.
Stage Two students are being exposed to a wider range of written texts, namely, ballads, elegies and odes. They are studying their purpose and also writing their own portfolio of poetry which will be showcased later this year.
Stage Two students will be exploring maths through problem solving using the ASPMO Maths Explorer program which will develop their skills and knowledge in math problem solving and prepare them for the challenges of the Maths Games and/or the Maths Olympiad in later years. The Maths Explorer program allows students in Years 3 and 4 to collaborate with their peers and work together to make decisions about the way they explore a problem, regardless of their abilities.
The Putney Drama Ensemble are rehearsing the original play written by our Drama teacher Mrs Ignazzi "An Elderly Person's Guide to Facebook" in the afternoon. They will be submitting an audition video of the production for the "Lights Up Drama Festival" which takes place in Term 3.
Stage 3 students were invited to submit an artwork about what an Australian soldier means to them.
Irene H, Elina J, Annika S & Olle W have all created unique pieces, using personal experiences.
These exhibits will be judged later this year and if successful, will be shown at the Q Theatre, Queanbeyan.
We wish these talented students every success.
