JUDGE INFO

Welcome to STLP Judging!

Thank you for your help providing feedback to our STLP Project Teams and Service Team interview candidates. Here are some details to get you ready for the event. I realize that this is a lot of information, but many folks have commented that they've found these details helpful in preparing for their role as STLP Judge:

LOCATION INFORMATION/ARRIVAL & PARKING For JUdges

  • Date: November 21st, 2019
  • Where: Concourse Level (follow STLP Judge signs)
  • When: Light Breakfast for judges starts at 8:15 am, Judge Training begins at 9:00 am (full schedule here)

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

There are two types of judging events going on at Regionals. You will be asked to choose to judge either: (1) Level 1 Projects or (2) Service Team interviews. Both types interact with K-12 students who are hoping to be invited to the STLP State Championship in April.

Upon arrival and check-in, you will have an opportunity to choose whether you judge Level 1 Projects or Service Category candidates. While the majority of judges will be needed to score Projects, there are also a number of students hoping to find a spot on one of the teams that perform various services at our State. Let's look at both:

LEVEL 1 PROJECT JUDGING:

STLP Regionals are an opportunity for K-12 students to present their creative, technology based, project ideas in a competitive atmosphere. They will be trying to convince you that their project idea is strong enough to get them invited to the next level of the competition, Level 2, at the State Championship in Lexington next April.

You will be on a judging team and using a rubric to score projects. Projects that receive the 85 points necessary to move on will have until April to make their project even better, ahead of the State Championship.

--- or ---

SERVICE INTERVIEWS:

Student will meet with your judge team in a one-on-one setting with hopes of being invited to serve on one of the volunteer teams at State that produce the on-stage productions, cover the social media updates, develop, shoot and edit videos highlighting the day's activities. Candidates bring devices with sample works preloaded to share with judges. Basically, these students go on to form the teams that run the STLP show behind the scenes.

Rubrics and sample questions are provided for both types of judging on site. Remember: It is not important that you, as the judge, are an expert in these fields (Media Arts, Live Production, etc.); instead, it's important that you can help determine which students have the right combination of demonstrated technical skill and leadership potential.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If you are new to STLP or new to judging at an STLP event, please know that our system works to provide all the necessary info you'll need to help our students have a successful experience at STLP. Our Judge Training session will begin at 9am sharp.

Be sure to come a little early to enjoy a light breakfast provided by our hosts from the Morehead College of Education.

Also, we work to pair you with experienced judges. Our goal is to make this process as easy as possible and not to burden you with a great deal of preparation before the event. However, if you would like to review the rubrics for Level 1 Projects or any of the Service Categories, please visit the Resources Section of this website.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

  1. Internet ready device (tablet, laptop, smartphone, etc.)
  2. Clipboard (if you want one)
  3. Comfy shoes
  4. Great attitude that's ready to learn from STLP Students!

HOW DO I PREPARE?

All needed training will be done on site, Thursday morning, during a short session that will begin promptly at 9am. Please plan to arrive as early as 8:15am to sign and enjoy a light breakfast.

When you arrive at the Student Union the folks at the Welcome/Information table can direct you to the judge HQ in the Governance Room (there will also be good signage).

We will provide all materials and training. While there is no "homework" ahead of the event, please feel free to review the Level 1 Project Scoring Guide at your leisure (access via the Resource page here)

Each judge is asked to bring an internet ready device to help enter final scores and comments into our online database. This process helps us get scores back to schools very quickly.

Note that judges will remain in the Judge Room to compile scores and could stay as late as 1:30 pm. Please consider this as you finalize your travel plans (since the students will be done at noon).

CAN'T MAKE IT TO REGIONALS?

The only "cost of admission" to STLP events is for participating schools to provide someone to act as a judge for the day. We rely on our volunteer judges to bring these opportunities to students.

If you cannot make it to Regionals to fulfill the judging duties, please contact your local STLP Coach and make them aware ASAP. Give the STLP Coach as much time as possible to find a replacement for you, please!

Each school needs to provide a judge to remain eligible for the competition.

Life happens... no hard feelings. Thanks for letting your STLP Coach know if necessary. :)
