BRIEF HISTORY
Village
The legend says that in olden days, people did not practice Buddhism and with the visit of Lam Dupthop Donga Rinchen(one of the famous saint in the old age in eastern region), he carved the footprint of Lord Buddha on the stone to prove that he had visited sacred places of Lord Buddha and to preach to make the people of the locality follow and believe the teachings of Lord Buddha after he visited Dorjidhen (sacred place in Bodh Gaya in India) and this is how Kangpar(Footprint) came to existence. We can still see the footprint in the village (few minutes’ walk from the school) where he meditated and settled.
SCHOOL
It was in the year 1961 when people of Kangpar Gewog contributed labour to construct 3 units of one storied building for the benefit of their children to get free education. The school started with 37 students taught by Mr.Kelzang Dawa, the only teacher appointed from the locality to teach Chhoekey and Dzongkha.
The school had been formally established with the recognition from Royal Government of Bhutan in 1964 and Mr.Srinivasan was the first headmaster appointed. Being the only school in the gewog, it had to serve many households which were very far away and many students had to stay as informal boarders. It was only in 1976, the school received WFP assistance for two meals and was discontinued in the year 2019 and is taken over by RGoB. UNICEF supported the school with the construction of dormitories, kitchen except dining hall by JICA in 1977.
Students were transferred to Wamrong Jr.High School after completing class of IV to continue their higher education. The school was upgraded up to class V in 1977 and 4 students appeared the common examination. In 1986, the school was upgraded to fully fledged primary school with 5 students in class VI who appeared PSCE.
This school serves the people of all the villages under Kangpar gewog and few from Thrimshing gewog and with the start of the 2008 academic session, this school has been upgraded to a Lower Secondary School with the first batch of 61 students in class VII who were placed to this school from the nearby primary schools (Thrimshing CPS, Tsangpo PS, Pasaphu PS and Threlphu CPS). The first batch of class VIII students graduated from this school in the academic year 2009.
During its service of more than 50 years, a dozen of head teachers/principals stepped in to run the school. The community has been greatly benefited as they could send their children to the school and exchange various ideas and information with teachers and other people. The students could perform well in academic and co-curricular activities. Students proved their abilities during various inter/intra sports meets at the Dzongkhag/Cluster/school level competitions and besides wining the Cluster Level championships for few years, this school won the Overall Championship trophy during the Intra-Dzongkhag Games & Sports Meet held in 2009 for secondary schools. Some students were also awarded the winners for various National Level essay and painting competitions. The school has come to the present position with the hard work and efforts of the many dedicated teachers under the leadership of the head teachers/principals.
