Established in 1966, the school is as old as the development story of our country itself. The school was started at an iconic location of Dobji Dzong thereby naming it as Dobji Primary School. The school was later shifted away from the Dzong to a new site until it finally settled at the present location called Lhakhang Zerkha. However, it is unknown why the school did not take its name from the place of its location. Instead the school took its name from the nearby village of Dawakha which is 8km away from the school. The school is surrounded by many famous temples like Chekhar Goenpa, Phudo Goenpa and Silung Goenpa and the Dobji Dzong. The school is fed by perennial spring water believed to be the holy water blessed by a dupthop named chekharpa whose remains are still preserved inside a chorten at Chekhar Goenpa. As a WFP- fed boarding school, many students from nearby and far-flung areas of the country came to study there. The school remained as primary school for more than three decades from 1966 – 2001. It was upgraded to a lower secondary school in 2002 with classes from prep- primary to eight. The development of school is attributed to some notable head teachers in past.
