What do different parts of plants do?

Let´s learn about the elements of the plants and how plants get their energy.

LET´S INVESTIGATE!

Flowers have brightly coloured petals that attract insects. When an insect flies from flower to flower it pollinates the flower. As the insect feeds, pollen grains stick to its body. When the insect flies to another flower, it leaves some pollen grains there.

DID YOU KNOW?

Plants can interact with their environment in many ways.

The Venus Fly trap is famous for being a carnivorous plant, but it can also make its own food like any other plant. It catches insects because it does not obtain sufficient nutrients from the soil. It has to supplement its diet by absorbing the nutrients in insects.

amazing Seed stories (I)

Did you know that scientists have germinated an ancient seed?

Archaeologists found some seeds under the ground when they were excavating and ancient fort in Israel. A biologist put these seeds in hot water to make them soft. Then she planted the seeds in small pots and put some fertiliser made of seeweed.

A small shoot appeared in one of the pots, then it grew bigger and stronger and then grew leaves. The plant was a date palm. It was almost two thousand years old!

amazing Seed stories (Ii)

The government in Norway has built an enormous vault to store half a million different seeds from plants that produce food. These seeds come from all around the world. The vault is deep inside a cave on an island called Spitsbergen. It can survive earthquakes and other natural disasters. The island of Spitsbergen is about 1,000 kilometres from the North Pole, so it is extremely cold and there´s a lot of snow. Scientists aren´t always on the island to guard the seeds, but there are plenty of polar bears to do the job for them!
