Welcome, young artists! In this project we’re going to draw a magical city inspired by Paul Klee, a Swiss-German painter who loved turning simple shapes into amazing works of art. Cities in his paintings look playful, colorful, and a little bit abstract—like a dream made of buildings.
This Paul Klee Castle and Sun art project was inspired by his famous Castle and Sun painting.
Let’s get started!
Draw your first building
Start with a tall rectangle.
Add a triangle on top for the roof.
Divide it into floors with horizontal lines and add windows.
Add more buildings
Draw another rectangle next to it, maybe shorter or taller.
Try overlapping buildings to make your city look lively.
Connect the buildings
Add a bridge or passageway between them. Paul Klee liked cities that felt connected.
Stack shapes
Add towers, smaller houses, or extra floors. Use rectangles, triangles, and squares.
Include details
Windows, doors, arches, and extra lines give character to each building.
Add the sky
Draw a big circle for the sun or moon above your city.
Outline your drawing
Go over your pencil lines with a black marker to make shapes stand out.
Color your city
Use crayons or colored pencils. Choose bold colors—warm tones for energy (reds, oranges, yellows) or cool tones for calm (blues, greens, purples).
