At NBHS, children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do.

We are proudly working towards achieving UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver: Rights Aware, and our whole school community is committed to creating an environment where every child:

Our commitment to the UNCRC guides our relationships, our curriculum, and our school culture.

We believe that when children know their rights — and see them in action every day — they grow in confidence, independence, and empathy.

Home Economics plays a powerful role in realising children’s rights within Curriculum for Excellence at NBHS. In our department, pupils don’t just learn nutrition, cooking and sewing skills — they learn to make informed choices, express their creativity, celebrate their identity, and work collaboratively in ways that reflect the values of the UNCRC. Through practical skills, cultural exploration, nutrition education, and inclusive classroom practice, Home Economics provides daily opportunities for young people to experience their rights in action.

By linking our Experiences and Outcomes to key UNCRC Articles, we ensure that every learner is heard, respected, included, and supported to develop the knowledge, confidence, and life skills they need to thrive. This rights‑based approach underpins our planning, teaching, assessment, and the welcoming environment we build for all young people.

The articles with a blue background have been chosen by the pupils in our school as our five to focus on, we believe that rights are the foundation of respect, fairness and opportunity for everyone - pupils, staff and parents.
