Principal’s Message
Welcome to semester two! We are glad to start this semester knowing that we will be moving forward with a full semester. Thank you for your support of our completion days in January. These days proved to be vital to our students and their success.
Semester two is a busy time; students need to start looking ahead to the next school year or their life after high school. It is essential that our students meet with their academic counselors to make sure they are on track, and grade 12 students need to set up their MyPass accounts to ensure they get their transcripts of their grades. Students in grades 10 and 11 need to start planning their classes to ensure they get all of they courses they need to complete their programming.
In February we spoke to each grade regarding attendance. Attendance is the key to success. We know that when students attend their classes, they are able to complete them successfully. Each year in semester one students who have not completed the majority or all of their courses successfully usually did not attend class on a regular basis. Attendance is the responsibility of each student; attending school can be equated to showing up to work each day. Our student’s job is school, so please show up on time and attend all classes!
Grad planning is well under way. We are looking forward to celebrating our grade 12 students in June. Grade 12 students must ensure they are meeting the attendance requirements and completing their courses to ensure they can cross the stage. We will be sending letters out next week detailing where grade 12 students are at for meeting the graduation ceremony requirements.
The next four months are full of activities - we will be starting spring sports, our Europe trip will be departing in March, one act play festival will occur, as well as the local music festivals and music tour. In May we will be hosting the Legacy of Hope display which focuses on learning about the impact of residential schools and the sixties scoop. We look forward to a successful semester, and as always, if you have any questions, please reach out to the school.

Sturgeon Public Schools is proud to be the first school division in Alberta to partner with Unplugged Canada, a parent-led movement encouraging families to delay giving children personal smartphones until at least age 14. Research shows that waiting can positively impact children’s mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. While technology is an important part of learning in our classrooms, personal smartphone and social media use present different challenges. By sharing the Unplugged Canada Pledge, we hope to support open conversations at home and connect families with the resources they need to make the best choices for their children. Participation is completely voluntary—learn more and sign the pledge https://www.sturgeon.ab.ca/unplugged

The $125 Grade 12 fee has been added to student accounts and statements have been emailed.
The fee is applied to all Grade 12 students, as we do not yet know who will ultimately graduate. Students may still participate in Grade 12 activities even if they are not currently on track to graduate. If a student graduates in a later year, the fee will not be charged again, as it is only paid once.
The fee covers Grade 12 activities and swag. For graduating students, it also includes the certificate, certificate cover, cap and gown rental, and one ceremony ticket for the graduate.

As colder weather approaches, families are reminded of Policy 17 - Inclement Weather, which outlines shared responsibilities among the Board, staff, school bus operators, and parents/guardians to ensure student safety during hazardous weather conditions. The policy emphasizes that while schools remain open, the final decision to send children to school or the bus stop rests with parents/guardians. Bus services may be suspended under specific conditions, such as temperatures reaching -40°C, poor visibility, or hazardous road conditions. Families will be notified of any cancellations or alterations through local media, the Division website, and social media. Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are dressed in weather-appropriate clothing. This policy, shared annually in school newsletters, underscores the Division’s commitment to student safety during the winter months.
