It is hard to believe December break is already here!
The past four months have flown by! Although the strike caused a break in our semester, our students and staff have come together to ensure their success as we finish this term. Our students and staff have had a full term of many field trips and amazing learning opportunities.
As we wrap up this busy and hectic time in December, it is always good to pause and remember to be thankful for all of the things we have. It is important to take time to slow down and to reflect and recharge. Too often, we are caught up in the stress of the holiday season. Take time to reflect on what is truly important, what actually brings you peace and joy. Focus on those areas and look to simplify your activities. Christmas holidays provide a time to reconnect with your children and to prepare them for the remainder of the school year.
The entire staff of Sturgeon Composite High School wishes all of our families a peaceful and restful holiday season. Thank you all for your continued support of our students and our school. We look forward to a well-deserved break. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
Darwin Krips, Principal

Sturgeon Public Schools is proud to be the first school division in Alberta to partner with Unplugged Canada, a parent-led movement encouraging families to delay giving children personal smartphones until at least age 14. Research shows that waiting can positively impact children’s mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. While technology is an important part of learning in our classrooms, personal smartphone and social media use present different challenges. By sharing the Unplugged Canada Pledge, we hope to support open conversations at home and connect families with the resources they need to make the best choices for their children. Participation is completely voluntary—learn more and sign the pledge https://www.sturgeon.ab.ca/unplugged

As colder weather approaches, families are reminded of Policy 17 - Inclement Weather, which outlines shared responsibilities among the Board, staff, school bus operators, and parents/guardians to ensure student safety during hazardous weather conditions. The policy emphasizes that while schools remain open, the final decision to send children to school or the bus stop rests with parents/guardians. Bus services may be suspended under specific conditions, such as temperatures reaching -40°C, poor visibility, or hazardous road conditions. Families will be notified of any cancellations or alterations through local media, the Division website, and social media. Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are dressed in weather-appropriate clothing. This policy, shared annually in school newsletters, underscores the Division’s commitment to student safety during the winter months.
