Dear Landing Trail and Gibbons Families,
We are writing to share important information regarding the upcoming ATA job action, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 6, 2025.
What This Means for Students and Families
Kindergarten to Grade 12: All classes will be suspended until further notice.
Pre-Kindergarten: Programming will continue as scheduled.
Transportation: Bus service for K–12 students will be suspended. Transportation will continue for Pre-K students, though wait times may be shorter than usual.
Extracurricular activities: All extracurricular programs will be suspended for the duration of the job action.
Access to schools: Students will not be permitted in school buildings during the strike. To prepare, students are bringing home any personal items they may need, and lockers are being cleaned out to ensure no food is left behind.
Staying Up-to-date: Ensure that you can receive emails from the Division, as email and the SPS Website will be the primary mode of communication.
We recognize that this creates challenges for families, and we strongly encourage you to make contingency plans for childcare and household routines during this time.
Sturgeon Public’s Role
It is essential to note that the Sturgeon Public School Division is not directly involved in negotiations. Teacher salaries and working conditions are set through provincial collective agreements.
The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) are the two parties involved in the negotiations.
TEBA represents the Government of Alberta and all public, separate, and Francophone school boards, including the Sturgeon Public School Board.
TEBA has applied for and received authority for a lockout vote as a response measure to strike action. This does not immediately affect school operations.
Who Is Impacted
Teachers and substitute teachers
Principals and Vice Principals
Certain Central Office staff who are ATA members (Division Principal, Director of Learning Services, Director of Education, Curriculum Coordinator, Indigenous Education Coordinator)
What Happens Next
At this time, the length of the strike cannot be predicted. Both the ATA and TEBA will continue to work toward a resolution.
We remain committed to keeping families updated with accurate and timely information as the situation unfolds. Please watch for updates from the Division and our schools.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as we navigate this together.
With gratitude,
Darryl Paziuk, Principal, Gibbons School
Louise Loh, Principal, Landing Trail School & Legal Public School

Gibbons School Parent Association Council ( PAC ) is made up of elected parent volunteers that meet once a month and work together to coordinate events and programs that effectively support and enhance the educational experience of our student population. The mandate of the group is to raise funds and allocate these monies in such a way as to benefit the school as a whole. Our PAC members promote opportunities via various fundraisers that help offset the cost to the school in providing enhanced educational opportunities such as school wide activities, school events, guest speakers, performers and adding supplemental resources that benefit our children. The PAC also runs, coordinates and operates the Hot Lunch and Nutrition Program.
Council meetings are held monthly ( first Monday of the month as the school calendar allows ), immediately following the School Council Meetings and are open to everyone. We hope to see you there!
** If the ATA strike overlaps future hot lunch dates they will be rescheduled to a later date **
