As the weather has become colder we want to ensure all parents are aware of Policy 17: Inclement Weather: and Administrative Procedure 255: Inclement Weather Decisions for Schools. The lowest temperature at which students will be required to go outside shall be -25 degrees celsius including wind chill as determined by the Weather Network for Bon Accord or the area if on a field trip. Please ensure your child comes prepared with the proper clothing to go outside for recesses, physical education or another learning experience outside.
Policy 17: Inclement Weather, which outlines shared responsibilities among the Board, staff, school bus operators, and parents/guardians to ensure student safety during hazardous weather conditions. The policy emphasizes that while schools remain open, the final decision to send children to school or the bus stop rests with parents/guardians. Bus services may be suspended under specific conditions, such as temperatures reaching -40°C, poor visibility, or hazardous road conditions. Families will be notified of any cancellations or alterations through local media, the Division website, and social media. Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are dressed in weather-appropriate clothing. This policy, shared annually in school newsletters, underscores the Division’s commitment to student safety during the winter months. If school bus services are suspended due to inclement weather, schools still remain open for students.
If your child will be absent from school, you may report that absence by emailing lilianschick@sturgeon.ab.ca or calling the school at 780-921-2200, if your call goes to voicemail please leave a message, the messages are checked frequently.
We are excited to support you through this year of learning, growth, and new experiences. Remember, the door is always open if you need someone to talk to or help navigating any challenges that come your way.
If your family is experiencing difficulties at home, we would like to provide additional support at school. We understand that you are not always able to share details and that's okay. If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning or weekend, get a message to the school saying "Handle with Care". Nothing else will be said or asked. We will inform all staff of the "Handle with Care." We will look to support your child as they may need extra time, patience or help during the day.
Thank you to all our volunteers who came out and supported our school School Council and Room Parent Association this year. Next meeting February 23rd at 6:30pm directly followed by Room Parent Association.
