After Spring Break, Guthrie School will be launching a new positive recognition initiative called the ‘Caught Being a G.A.T.O.R’ as part of our Behaviour Support Plan.
Staff will give students G.A.T.O.R Tickets when they demonstrate our school values:
G – Growth
A – Accountability
T – Teamwork
O – Optimistic Attitude
R – Respect
Students will place their tickets into a weekly draw. Winners will be able to select a reward from our GATOR Prize Board.
Once we get rolling, every ticket will contribute to a grade division or school-wide goal. When we reach our goal, we will celebrate with a special reward.
Be sure to ask your child if they earned a GATOR Ticket!
We’re excited to continue our partnership with HYPE (Helping Young People Excel) this year. Through the Mental Health Capacity Building Program, HYPE will be working with students every Wednesday, supporting universal and targeted social–emotional learning and well-being across all grade levels.
For Kindergarten to Grade 6, programming will take place in classrooms and will align directly with the Physical Education and Wellness curriculum, focusing on the CASEL five areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
The collaboration also includes Positive Playground activities and small-group SEL sessions during lunch to help students build positive relationships and problem-solving skills.
In Junior High, HYPE will lead a Mental Health and Life Skills Series on topics such as anxiety, anger, bullying, and self-confidence, in partnership with school staff.
We’re grateful for this ongoing collaboration, which strengthens our whole-school focus on building healthy relationships and a resilient school community.
This month, we are focusing on Teamwork and what it means to work together toward a common goal. As we continue to grow as GATORS—showing Growth, Accountability, Teamwork, Optimism, Respect, and Success—teamwork helps students learn how to collaborate, include others, and contribute in meaningful ways. It strengthens how they problem-solve, build relationships, and experience success as part of a group.
At Guthrie School, teamwork is part of our daily learning—from partner work in the classroom to cooperation on the playground, in clubs, and during school-wide activities. As we move into the busy spring months, there are many opportunities for students to practice working together, supporting one another, and celebrating shared accomplishments. These moments help us continue building a strong and connected GATOR community.
At home, teamwork often shows up in simple, everyday ways. Whether it’s helping with chores, getting ready for activities, or working through a challenge together, these are great opportunities to reinforce that everyone plays a role. Encouraging your child to ask, “How can I help?” or “What can we do together?” helps build a mindset of contribution and cooperation.
Together, we continue to build a community where students learn not just to work alongside one another—but to truly work with one another.
Teamwork connects to being a GATOR:
Growth – We learn from each other and grow together.
Accountability – We do our part and follow through.
Teamwork – We include others and work toward shared goals.
Optimism – We encourage each other and stay positive.
Respect – We value everyone’s ideas and contributions.

Dear Guthrie Parents/Guardians
I would like to let you know that we have made the following changes to our phone policy at the school.
All phones are secured in student lockers from 8:30am until 3:00pm.
If the students are leaving school property at lunch they can take their phones with them. The phone needs to be returned to their lockers as soon as the student returns to school. The school has provided locks for student lockers this year to ensure phones are secure.
If students do not follow the rules, the school will take the following steps:
First Offence:
The phone is turned into the office. The phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
Second Offence:
The phone is turned into the office. Parents are contacted and will need to pick up their student's phone at school.
Third Offence:
The student will be suspended in-school for one day.
Last year, we had very few problems with phones in our school.
This change brings our school policy in line with other Junior High Schools in our division and emerging research showing that our students need to spend less time on their screen and more time interacting with peers and adults.
Thank you for your continued support.

Building the GATOR Vibe at Guthrie
This year, we are excited to introduce the GATOR program as a school-wide initiative that brings all of our students, K–9, together around a shared culture of leadership, community, and belonging. Throughout the year, all students will participate in Social Emotional Learning, school-wide activities, and assemblies that embrace what it means to be a GATOR. Stay tuned as we celebrate monthly themes that highlight individuality, pride, and the unique spirit of Guthrie School!
For our Junior High students, the GATOR program also includes a new class that blends Physical Education and Wellness outcomes. The GATOR classes will focus on leadership, teamwork, and problem solving. On Friday afternoons, all Junior High students will gather for activities, workshops, guest speakers, and experiences designed to build real-world skills and resilience.
The GATOR program supports our division’s goals of Empowered Learning, Healthy Communities, and Future Readiness, ensuring that all Guthrie students are prepared to thrive in a safe, respectful, and collaborative learning environment
At Guthrie School, we are committed to fostering safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for all students. One of the key tools we use to achieve this is the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) system. TCIS is a trauma-informed, division-wide framework designed to help staff prevent crises, de-escalate potential conflicts, and support students in developing healthy emotional regulation and coping skills. This system not only enhances safety and well-being but also promotes stronger relationships between students, staff, and families.
Counsellor Corner
In addition to my role as Vice Principal, I am excited to also be serving as Guthrie’s School Counsellor this year. In this role, I’ll be working closely with students, staff, and families to support wellness, learning, and a strong sense of community.
Each month, we’ll shine a spotlight on a school-wide value. For September, our focus is belonging. Belonging means feeling accepted, valued, and connected- something we all want for our children. Families are an essential part of this, and the conversations you have at home help reinforce what we’re building together at school.
Here are a few simple ways to explore belonging with your child:
Ask, “Who made you feel welcome at school today? How did you help someone else feel included?”
Share a personal story about a time when you felt a strong sense of belonging.
Brainstorm small acts of kindness that help others feel they belong—like saving a seat, inviting someone new to join in, or offering a helping hand.
I look forward to working alongside you this year to help every Gator find their place, their purpose, and their people here at Guthrie.
Warmly,
Lori

Dear Sturgeon Public Schools Families,
We are grateful for the contributions of our volunteers who play a vital role in our school programs. To ensure a safe and supportive environment, all volunteers must complete the annual SPS Volunteer Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement and adhere to confidentiality standards in line with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). Additionally, roles involving sole supervision, such as field trips or coaching, require a criminal record check and vulnerable sector verification, renewed every three years.
The annual SPS Volunteer Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement will be available for parents to complete through PowerSchool, where you normally complete permission forms. Volunteering is a privilege managed by the school Principal, who ensures that all volunteer work supports school staff efforts. We value your dedication and commitment to our students, our schools and our communities and look forward to continuing to welcome you into our schools.
For further details, please find the updated Administrative Procedure 315: Volunteers and its new exhibit - SPS Volunteer Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement on our website.
Thank you for making a difference!
