Supply Lists can be found on our website:
Supply Lists | Four Winds Public School
As we begin the new school year, we are anticipating hot weather. We could potentially be spending more time outdoors, so please remember to pack sunscreen and a water bottle in your child’s backpack. Indoor shoes for a quick change of footwear is recommended.
As outlined in Administrative Procedure 255, all strenuous outdoor activities, including sports practices and events such as football, must be cancelled when the AQHI reaches a level of 7 or higher. All outdoor activities, including walking outdoor fieldtrips should be canceled when the AQHI reaches 10 or higher.
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, all students in Grades 7 to 9 are encouraged to bring a personal learning device (such as a Chromebook or laptop) to school each day to support their classroom learning.
What is BYOD?
BYOD stands for "Bring Your Own Device." It's an educational approach that allows students at Four Winds Public School to use their personal devices (like laptops, tablets, or Chromebooks) for learning at school.
- Students learn to use technology effectively
- Prepares them for future careers and high school
Increases access to digital tools
- More devices available for learning
- Less strain on school resources
- Students can use familiar devices
- Easier to continue learning at home
- Students learn to use technology appropriately
- Develops online safety skills
As our school grows, we are no longer able to sustain a 1-to-1 device program in Junior High. The BYOD program allows us to continue providing excellent technological resources for our students while managing our school's growth.
While Grade 5 and 6 students are welcome to bring their own devices to school, it's not mandatory. Here's what you need to know:
Students can bring their personal devices if they wish
Each classroom will have 10 shared devices available for student use
Chromebook
Laptop
iPad/tablet (with keyboard)
Note: 📵 Cell phones and smart watches are NOT allowed during class time
When considering purchasing a device for school, please consider a Chromebook. This is the most cost effective option to meet your child’s educational needs.
You can find suitable devices for the BYOD program at the following retailers:
Costco
Visions
Best Buy
Staples
Important: Always ask for the most current stock when purchasing. Chromebooks are now designed to receive updates for 10 years, making them a long-lasting option for students.
Important Rules for BYOD Students
1. Devices must connect to school Wi-Fi only
2. Usage only under teacher direction
3. Students must follow the district's Responsible Use of Technology policy while on devices at school.
Label devices and use protective cases (make note of the model and serial number)
Students are responsible for their own devices
The school is not liable for loss or damage
At Four Winds Public School, we understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between traditional learning methods and digital technology. While we're excited about our BYOD program, we also recognize the value of paper-based activities and hands-on learning experiences.
We will continue to use a mix of digital and traditional learning tools in all subjects
Students will still use notebooks, textbooks, and other physical materials alongside their devices
Regular breaks will be scheduled during extended periods of device use
Some lessons and activities will be entirely screen-free to provide variety in learning experiences
Students will still engage in group discussions, presentations, and collaborative projects that don't always require technology
At Four Winds, our goal is to prepare students for a digital future while also nurturing their overall development. By balancing screen time with other learning methods, we aim to create well-rounded, adaptable learners who are comfortable with both digital and traditional tools.
Remember, the BYOD program is just one part of our comprehensive approach to education. We're committed to providing a rich, varied learning experience that prepares our students for success in all areas of life.
Final Thoughts
Our goal is to ensure this is a positive and inclusive experience for all students and families. If purchasing a device poses a financial challenge, please don’t hesitate to contact the school. We are committed to finding a fair and supportive solution so that no child is left out.
“Childhood changed in the early 2010s, and so did adolescent mental health. A once-in-a-century transformation occurred as childhood was rewired into something phone-based, screen-centered, and largely indoor, with far less free play and independence.” J. Haidt
We are grateful for the contributions of our volunteers who play a vital role in our school programs. To ensure a safe and supportive environment, all volunteers must complete the annual SPS Volunteer Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement and adhere to confidentiality standards in line with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). This form can be found in the link above or online in Powerschool where you would find Field Trip forms. Additionally, roles involving sole supervision, such as field trips or coaching, require a criminal record check and vulnerable sector verification, renewed every three years.
The annual SPS Volunteer Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement will be available for parents to complete through PowerSchool, where you normally complete permission forms. Volunteering is a privilege managed by the school Principal, who ensures that all volunteer work supports school staff efforts. We value your dedication and commitment to our students, our schools and our communities and look forward to continuing to welcome you into our schools.
For further details, please find the updated Administrative Procedure 315: Volunteers.
At Four Winds Public School, we are committed to fostering safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for all students. One of the key tools we use to achieve this is the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) system. TCIS is a trauma-informed, division-wide framework designed to help staff prevent crises, de-escalate potential conflicts, and support students in developing healthy emotional regulation and coping skills. This system not only enhances safety and well-being but also promotes stronger relationships between students, staff, and families.
The Four Winds Public School, Early Bird Cafe, is up and running again for the third year at school. Our EBC's main focus is to nourish our students experiencing food insecurities by providing healthy breakfast, lunch & snack options everyday throughout the school year. If you would like more information about our program or wish to volunteer, you can email Mrs. Kim deChamplain at: kim.dechamplain@sturgeon.ab.ca
We appreciate any donations, whether it be monetary, food, or your volunteer time. Please contact Kim deChamplain for more information.

We would like to extend our continued gratitude to Breakfast Club of Canada, the Midstream Society and President's Choice Children's Charities for their ongoing financial donations that help us support a nourished environment for our students.
Please check out the PowerSchool How-To Document for any difficulties you may be experiencing. Powerschool is a program used by schools for fees, forms, report cards and registrations. Please create your powerschool parent portal if you have not already done so.
