The first layer is a network among Nordic and Baltic universities which share similar interests in assessment of CT. Through this project, participating universities create a strong research network which advance current scientific discussion of assessment of CT by developing and testing a versatile assessment tool which can be applied flexibly in different cases.
The second layer consists of networks of local institutions around CT in K-12 education, including university(s), schools, and public and private sectors. As CT in K-12 education is an emerging area, researc-based support for schools and teachers, as well as intense collaboration among institutions are important for successful integration and assessment of CT at school. In addition, involving schools will result in strengthening awareness and understanding of the concepts, practices and perspectives of CT at school.
Universities obtain the benefits including advancing current discussion of assessment of CT through interdisciplinary and international collaboration, building network with universities in Nordic and Baltic countries, developing close relationship with local schools. Main contribution of the participating universities is to provide conceptual understanding towards CT with perspectives from different fields. As the project is multidimensional, it involves various (e.g., educational, technological, computational) scopes. Each participating university has expertise to contribute to the project.
From the University of Oulu, two faculties, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering are participating in the project. Professor Kati Mäkitalo (Faculty of Education) has been conducting research on teacher education, as well as maker education in K-12 contexts.
Professor Jukka Riekki (Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering) has studied in advanced technologies, such as 6G, AI, human-driven digital technologies. Also the university has a makerspace (Fab Lab Oulu) which has been supporting local schools to implement maker education. Combining expertise and involving perspectives from multiple fields encourage the project to develop comprehensive understanding of the phenomena.
The University of Eastern Finland has strong expertise in CT research. Professor Matti Tedre (School of Computing) has been publishing scientific contributions on the topic of CT summarizing historical views of CT and providing novel conceptual understanding of CT with holistic view. Their experience in the field of CT brings great insights to understand CT in K-12 contexts and contributes to build common ground for Nordic approach towards CT.
Professor Dagiene Valentina and her research group at the Vilnius University (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics ) have conducted research in integrating CT in K-12 classrooms combining with different subject studies.Their scientific contributions including innovative approach to integrate CT in K-12 education has been widely acknowledged. The university also has demonstrated teachers' professionaldevelopment of competences in CT. Their expertise brings practical perspectives for integrating CT inK-12 school curriculum.
Professor Marcelo Milrad and his research group at the Department of Computer Science and MediaTechnology (Faculty of Technology) at the Linnaeus University have conducted research in advanced technologies and CT for pupils in collaboration. They have been working with schools, municipality and public enterprises to introduce education which enhances maker activity, robotics and CT. Also they have been supporting school teachers in developing competences to apply digital technologies in teaching and learning. Their expertise and concrete examples contribute to the project in terms of exploring essential aspects of integrating CT into school curriculum.
Senior researcher Dr. Mart Laanpere and colleagues at the Tallinn University (School of Digital Technologies) have worked on various projects regarding digital competences and CT in collaboration with schools. Especially their experiences in developing assessment tools for digital competences bring bases for design tool for CT. Also they provide expertise of teacher education in CT.
The project benefits participating schools in terms of enhancing integrating CT into school curriculum.The final outcome of the project: assessment tool for CT directly contribute schools to implement CT inteaching and learning. In addition, the project focus on digital fabrication and maker activities as contextsto develop CT, which provides practical hands-on experiences involve processes to enhance CT.Through participating in this project and discussing with participants from higher education, ambassadorteachers develop conceptual understanding of CT and competences to support pupils’ in learning ofCT in maker activities. Schools provide practical insights towards assessment in K-12 education andimplementation of the curriculum, as well they provide contexts to test the assessment tool. With schools'contributions, outcomes of the project become practically useful for K-12 schools in Nordic and Balticcountries.
