“My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.” - Malcolm X
“One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.” - Carl Sagan
LIBRARY EXPECTATIONS & borrowing & access
Student Expectations
Libraries are used to meet the needs of many patrons with diverse questions and needs. Our community appreciates a library that is a welcoming, productive, considerate place to work, think, read, design, collaborate, study, share, and ask questions. Be respectful. With privilege comes responsibility. Please visit Student Expectations or LRC Procedures & Expectations for more information.Library Accounts
Access your library account at http://library.sumnersd.org, choose Sumner High School, and login using your student computer login and ID. Use the "my stuff" tab to find your account, history, items out, and due dates. Borrowing
Library books are checked out for two weeks at a time and may be renewed up to three times if there are no current holds on the title. Materials that are already late cannot be self-renewed, but they can be renewed in person. Please return or renew books on time. Lost, damaged, and books that are not returned are subject to fines as defined by district policy. We believe that the library should be a free and accessible resource for all students; books that are held past their due date restricts access.We send overdue notices out weekly through student email, but there are many ways to keep informed and avoid fines: 1) ask the library staff to check due dates and/or renew books, 2) check account or renew online by logging in to "My Stuff" with the district computer ID and password, 3) check SBLSD gmail account for weekly overdue notices, and/or 4) watch EdAccess for current fines for lost or damaged materials. “I kept always two books in my pocket, one to read, one to write in.” - Robert Louis Stevenson
“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” - Ray Bradbury
LIBRARY MISSION
ensuring that Spartans are effective users and producers of ideas and information
Professionally staffed school library programs help students become college and career ready by
*providing intellectual and physical access to books, resources, and technology;
*cooperatively developing strategies to meet and extend the resource and inquiry needs of our school communities;
*teaching information literacy, responsible use, and 21st century critical thinking skills;
*encouraging students to be independent thinkers, readers, creators, and imaginative problem solvers; and
*ensuring that students and staff are effective users and producers of ideas and information.
“Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world.” - Napoléon Bonaparte
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." - Margaret Fuller
PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Students should get a free Pierce County Library System card to access library resources throughout our Pierce County community, including books, Overdrive content, and subscription databases. Reciprocal library cards can be arranged with neighboring library systems, including King County Libraries, Tacoma Public Libraries, and Puyallup Public Libraries, which will give users access to more digital and print content.
