It is essential that educators and administrators are vigilant in safeguarding personal and student Personally Identifiable Inforamtion (PII) when using all online tools, including AI enabled software and large language models. Data mining and selling is a multi billion dollar industry and as educators, we are legally responsible for safeguarding student Data. It is also in our own bets interest to safeguard our own PII.
In our AI Boot Camp Certification Program, students learn to use large language models as thought partners to develop definitions and Analogies for complex terms that make personal connections and foter understanding. Here are examples of student work explaining the foundational vocabulary for Artificial Intelligence.
Talking to a large language model is like talking to an extremely capable, but extremely literal assistant. As educators, we have experience and expertise in pre-planning our message before carefully articulating it to our students. Prompt engineering requires this same process.
Prompt frames are an excellent way to get started with prompt engineering, by simply filling in the blanks of a pre-made prompt with your desired details (always excluding PII). Click here to access our Prompt Frame Building Resource.
AI Enabled tools are just like prompt frames. They ask the user for limited input and then add pre-prompting from the developers to help generate the desired output. While the user has less control over the output, it requires less explanation in the prompt. These free AI Enabled tools can be found in Google Classroom when accessed with a school account.
When you are ready to move beyond basic prompt engineering, feedback, and refinement, check out our Gems Resource to practice using Gemini as a thought partner to transform teaching and learning in your school.
