Reading

As a teacher I believe that reading has so many foundational skills. In my class we work on these skills to not only become better readers but to better understand what we read. I do my very best to find material that interests my students and that can be broken down in a myriad of ways. Studies and my experience shows that building vocabulary is one of the best ways to enhance a students reading ability. With each skill or concept we work on vocabulary words and adding new words to our every day conversations.

Writing

Writing is a huge part of fifth grade and it has a tremendous number of concepts within the subject. We will work on grammar and parts of speech to improve student's sentence writing. As students improve we will work on explanations and details to allow us to write paragraphs. Once this is mastered we will work on using evidence to prove our ideas or thoughts and then write our first essays and letters. When the year concludes students will be proficient in the basics of writing and go on to write wonderful stories and poems as they continue writing in sixth grade.
