At Cheyenne Middle School, the Academic Team is an after-school group that meets once a week. Practices alternate between playing competitive games and studying various topics that will serve us well during the season.
Academic Team is open to all 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students at Cheyenne. Students can join at any point in the year, and there is no strict attendance policy. However, if a student would like to be considered for a spot on a competitive team, then that student must have regular attendance, fill out our membership forms, and pay our $25 participation fee. This fee is required only once a school year.
Academic Team covers a variety of topics, such as: civics, history, geography, math, science, music, art, grammar, medicine, literature, sports, current events, and more. Students do not need to specialize in these topics, but should be open to learning more about at least one of these topics.
The Cheyenne Middle School Academic Team plays under the Oklahoma Junior Academic Bowl Association (OJABA) rules and tournament bracket. Our competitive season begins in January and ends in April, though the team meets throughout the school-year. Games consist of four quarters. Quarters 1 and 3 are toss-up rounds in which students activate buzzers to answer questions as they are asked. Quarters 2 and 4 are speed rounds in which students compete as a team to answer up to 10 questions under 60 seconds. Each correct answer scores the team 10 points. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
