Partner Susan Winkelman’s practice focuses on representing public school districts in special education matters. She provides general counsel and advice regarding compliance with state and federal special education laws, assists school districts with preparing for and participating in IEP team meetings, and represents school districts in all stages of litigation, including dispute resolution.
In this informational session about SIOP, participants will be introduced to this research-based instructional model that benefits all students. An overview of the SIOP model will be provided, along with a dive into one of the SIOP Components: Strategies. Participants will leave with an understanding of the benefits of SIOP and with a few tangible instructional techniques and resources to use in the classroom the very next day.

Classroom 180: A preview as well as some first steps to building a trauma informed classroom based on the work done by Heather T. Forbes, LCSW and published in her books Help for Billy and Classroom 180. We'll be giving an overview on what both build and classroom level communities can do to engage with learners who may be struggling with regulation. By meeting them where they're at, as well as putting some of our tools in your toolbox our hope is teachers start the year of on a great first footing.

Successful transition from self-contained to inclusive settings, how to adjust IEPs to the “new normal”
Dr. West Keller is a graduate of the University of Washington-College of Education with his Ph.D. in Special Education, emphasis on early childhood education (ECE). His research foci include ECE programmatic planning, professional development, dual language learners (DLLs), continuous growth and improvement via communities of practice (COP), and practice-based coaching. His dissertation project surveyed coach perceptions of the efficacy and implications of COPs among a coaching population in the quality rating and improvement system of Washington State, otherwise known as Early Achievers. He is currently the manager of special education programs and principal at Alderwood Early Childhood Center (AECC). He has trained across Washington, taught graduate and undergraduate sessions at UW-Seattle, and presented at many regional and national professional conferences on various topics. He is a former trainer in the following measures and tools: Environment Rating Scales-Early Childhood (ECERS-R & E3); Infant/Toddler (ITERS-R & I3) and Family Child Care (FCCERS-R); Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS- Pre-K and Toddler); Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Preschool (TPOT). He lives in Seattle with his wife, two children, and two dogs.

This session provides an opportunity to focus inward, practice several mindful movement techniques, reflect, and rest. Activities will include breathing exercises, gentle movements, as well as a guided relaxation, and/or space for staff to simply take a break!
The session will be facilitated by Special Education Program Manager, Rebekah Doyle, PT, DPT. Rebekah is a registered yoga and children’s yoga teacher and is excited to share some of the techniques and resources she implemented when she worked as a school-based physical therapist in Tucson, Arizona.
