Driver’s Education is scheduled for students during their sophomore year. The course runs for an entire Marking Period. The New Jersey Driver Manual supplied by the state of New Jersey is frequently referred to during the class. The objective of the course is to prepare the students for the state exam and to promote defensive driving habits. The students are graded in several areas; tests, quizzes, projects, classwork and homework. The final exam is given at the end of the Marking Period. It is known as the Motor Vehicle Commission’s Written Knowledge Exam. To earn a passing grade on the test, a student must score 80% or better. The knowledge exam is also offered at the Motor Vehicle Commission in South Plainfield for those students who do not earn at least an 80%. Passing the knowledge exam is the first step in the process of getting the Special Learner’s Permit. The next step is enrolling in a state approved driving school for driving lessons. The student must be 16 years old to start the driving lessons. (16 years old students must enroll in a driving school to get their permit, 17 year old students do not need to enroll with a driving school, it is optional after taking this course). Once the student completes the lessons, the driving school will give the student their permit. Driving schools range in price. There are many reputable companies in the Middlesex County area.
