In the first unit of the year, lasting from September until January, the students will be introduced to the Spanish language through authentic and cultural experiences, games and activities. Students will be learning about colors, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, weathers, shapes and greetings in Spanish. Also, students will start creating their own portfolio in Seesaw. The students will have many opportunities to apply the body part vocabulary learned in real-life experiences and activities with their peers. Students will demonstrate their knowledge with a summative project at the end of the unit.

Students will have many opportunities to employ the vocabulary they have learned in games, activities and real-life experiences to review and master the words. The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the vocabulary at the end of the unit through an oral interview.

In the first unit of the year, the students are learning about the tropical rainforest in Puerto Rico, called El Yunque. The students are exploring the selva tropical first through the fruit that can be found within the forest and on the island of Puerto Rico. The students will be acquiring the new vocabulary while expanding upon and applying grammatical phrases learned in the past to the vocabulary within this unit (such as describing a favorite fruit). They will apply the language through various games and interactive activities. At the end of the fruit sub-unit, they will create a summative project demonstrating their knowledge.

Students will begin the school year with a review of what has been previously learned, the alphabet and question words. Then, students will learn about Mexico and the very important holiday Día de los Muertos. They will be studying the products, perspectives and practices of Mexicans who celebrate this holiday November 1st and 2nd. Students will learn relevant vocabulary and will compare and contrast this Mexican holiday to Halloween. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the practices, products and perspectives of Dia de los Muertos with the creation and presentation of a virtual altar.
