Why Does Edina Need School Social Workers?

In a rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society, there are a growing number of issues our children and their families face: a global, 24-hour a day economy; technological access to a myriad of entertainment, information, and communication resources; fragmentation and blending of families which are increasingly mobile; persistent mental and chemical health concerns; disconnected and estranged youth and adults involved in violent public rampages; and the explosion of mainstream and alternative education options, to mention a few. Many otherwise "average" youth and their families are dealing with complex issues in a social and political climate where standards, norms, and tolerances are shifting. And some are simply feeling overwhelmed as the margins of their lives are packed to overflowing in a world reeling from option-shock.

Of course, there are some issues that are tough for anybody to deal with, but are part of life. For example, moving to a new school or community; the death of a parent, sibling or friend; the pressure of high expectations in school; kids dealing with "unreasonable" parents (or parents dealing with "unreasonable" kids); and balancing family, school, work and extracurricular activities. Support services offered during these times of need can make a difference.

School Social Workers are a valuable resource to the school community, providing a variety of support services to students, families and staff. They are called on to address tough life issues that may have a direct impact on a student's academic performance, and assist in intervening during times of personal, school or community crisis. They also connect people with the helping resources available in-school and outside-of-school, and can be advocates for students whose needs are not being met.
